Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is the manual process of stick welding. Stick welders rely on an electric current to create an arc between the stick and the metal. Gas tungsten arc gas welders (GTAW/TIG) are used to weld thick stainless steel or non-ferrous metals. It is a type of arc weld and uses tungsten electrodes to create the weld.
