Q: Can I burn holes in landscape fabric

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, while the Mr. Heater 500,000 BTU Handheld Propane Torch is powerful enough to melt landscape fabric, it is generally not recommended for burning precise planting holes. This high-output torch produces a massive flame designed for heavy-duty weed clearing or melting ice, which can easily cause the fabric to ignite, shrink uncontrollably, or release toxic plastic fumes.

Works Great!!!!!

This does a great job. Sounds like a jet engine when lit. Be very careful when you open the valve to your tank. Open it very slowly. If you open it too quickly a safety feature within the torch greatly reduces the amont of gas. You only get a yellow flame. If this happens shut off the valve on your tank and open the valve on the torch. Then shut valve on torch and slowly open tank valve.

Design Flaw

Mr. Heater, I purchased this at Tractor Supply. I couldn't find my receipt, so I decided to do some troubleshooting. I could get air all the way up to the Open/Close valve, but could not get it to flow to the end of the burner. I took the device apart, including removing the open/close assembly. I could blow air from the open/close assembly back through the hose to the tank. However, I could not get air to flow from open/close assembly out to the burner. I tried to unscrew the pipe from the open/close assembly, but you glue them into the open/close assembly. So, I broke the open/close assembly when trying. However, I cut the pipe off of the open/close assembly and immediately saw what was blocking the propane from getting through the open/close assembly. Seems that when you glue the pipes when you screw them in, you must use an excess of glue and it hardened and blocked the hole for the outlet to the burner torch. I used a small self taping screw on that end and screwed through the glue. Then, I could blow air through the entire length of the hose to the torch. I kept thinking it was the POL end and the pressure switch shutting down, but I kept backtracking by blowing air through the line until I get to that point. I broke my torch in the process of fixing it from your flaw. I would really like a new torch end.

Junk

First time I used it seemed ok. Second time I could barely get a flame to come out of it. Lack of pressure or something. Messed with it for 15 minutes then threw it in the trash that’s about all it is good for

Hello! I'm sorry to hear you had trouble with your torch. It sounds like the excess flow device in the hose was triggered. If you'd like, please give us a call at 1-800-251-0001 and we can help get that working again. Have a great day! Enerco

This product is great, but follow instructions!

Works great! But, you have to learn how to adjust your fuel source incoming pressure (almost nothing - maybe open tank valve 1/4” to 1/2” at the tank) AND THEN adjust the wand output “gently”. Getting those two correct is a learning process. However, once you set it up “correctly” before you light it, and find the right output volume from your propane tank, it really ROCKS for the money! Be patient. Took me maybe 10 full minutes to get the combination correct and make the wand into a jet engine exhaust.

This has restricted flow fittings

Due to restricted flow fittings, I couldn’t char wood, and I couldn’t burn weeds with it either. After comparing to one I already own, I saw that the propane fittings restrict flow. I wasted money on this one. Went online and bought a 1.8 million btu which actually works like my old one.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Exactly what I’d hoped. READ instructions.

I did not experience any issues with this torch. I did what the INSTRUCTIONS SAID and it worked perfectly on a new tank of 20 lb propane. If using to augment snow removal, do not try to melt snow directly, it will not work as one would want as snow is a good insulator. Instead, remove most of the snow and warm the surface with the torch so the snow melts from the bottom up from the surface warming. After, apply salt so it does not refreeze! There is a limit to the high and low temperature of the environment when in use - the hose and seals can only take so much abuse. It was roughly 5-10°F tonight and the hose was quite stiff, as you’d expect for most rubbers in the dead of winter.

Yes, I recommend this product.
