Item Information

Nutrena SafeChoice Perform is a high fat, controlled starch formula, formulated with more energy from fat for performance and breeding horses and lactating mares.

  • Helps take the worry out of feeding; controlled starch diets with added fat are widely recommended to help improve performance and reduce metabolic concerns
  • Makes feeding convenient; it's scientifically balanced to meet the nutritional requirements of horses in all life stages, particularly those with higher energy or caloric requirements

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mold! I used this feed for several years with no problems. Then about 8 months ago started having mold problems over and over. I tried purchasing from different feed store and had same problems. I don't know what changed at plant but I would not feed this to any horses that you think a lot off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth it. Pony is an Arab cross who lives outside 24/7 in MT. I feed performance every day alongside a VitE supplement in the winter. I've seen really good changes in his overall health and energy. This is the first year he's shed out on time, and not hung on to his coat and I think I have his good nutrition to thank for that. He also has developed a beautiful topline (excerise was also involved) and is muscling up nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! Very pleased with results! I purchased this product 6 months ago when I bought a new horse. He was thin and had no top line. Within 2 months of feeding this product he was putting on weight and developing a top line.

What would be a good feed for a 29 yr old miniature horse with Cushings that is a 3 bcs score that can eat hay and pasture? She is on pergolide and has pretty good teeth. I would like her to gain40 lbs before winter.

Can This Feed Be Fed To a Young Pleasure Horse Who Is Lightly Rode but is a Very Hard Keeper Without Making Them Very Hot and Getting to Much Sugar ?

Asked by: CowGirl1994
Hello, Thank you for the question. Yes, the SafeChoice Perform can be utilized for the horse you describe. Keep in mind that overall calorie intake can contribute to energy levels, as well as sugar intake, and if the horse is not receiving enough exercise time, they may be "hot" no matter what product you feed. The other product you could feed, in conjunction with the SafeChoice Perform, is our Empower Boost high fat rice bran supplement. You can add up to 3 lbs per day of that product to provide a boost of calories to help get them up to condition, and then cut back once they are at condition until you find the feeding rate at which he maintains condition. Note that Empower Boost should not be fed as the sole grain ration, as it is not fortified for that.

My horse is 27. I ride him 3 or 4 times a week. He is a very happy man! Sadly he has lost a lot of weight, muscle especially in his TOPLINE!! Will this help? Any info is welcome! He get 4 qts of producer pride sweet feed and 2 oz of cool calories daily.

Asked by: Mustangirl7
Hello, Thanks for the question. Yes, you would definitely see an improvement in topline, as well as overall condition and muscling, if you were to switch to the SafeChoice Perform horse feed. The amino acid profile, as well as overall levels of vitamins and minerals, will be substantially better. If you know his weight, you can use the feeding rate calculator found on the Nutrenaworld.com product page (https://www.nutrenaworld.com/product/safechoice-perform-horse-feed) to determine how much to feed him. We do recommend weighing the feed in your scoop to ensure he is receiving the correct amount, for reference though the SafeChoice Perform weighs approximately 1.5 lbs per quart.

I`m trying to bring a horse in heavy work up to show weight. Are the feeding recommendations for putting weight on horses or maintaining horses? Is this feed likely to make my horse hot?

Asked by: RedRockteer
Hello, Great question. The directions are for maintaining weight. If you want to put weight on a horse, then feed for one activity level higher than the horse is actually at, to provide the additional calories needed for the weight gain. The SafeChoice Perform is a controlled starch, high fat product, so should not make your horse. If you do find you want to put more weight on, with less of the SafeChoice, try supplementing with Empower Boost, our high fat rice bran supplement. Thank you!
