Q&As

Q: Has anyone else noticed the quality of this feed changing over the past few months? It's definitely not the same formula, much drier and light brown in color? My sr horse is turning up his nose and mostly wasting it now.

1 Answer
  • A: We’re sorry to hear your horse hasn’t been eating the feed as usual. While Purina has not announced a major formula change, differences in color, texture, or moisture can sometimes occur between batches due to normal ingredient variation. If the feed appears significantly different or your horse continues refusing it, we recommend checking the lot code and contacting Purina directly for batch review. You can also reach out to your local store with your purchase information to discuss possible return or replacement options according to store policy.

Q: Did the ingredients recently change? We have been using this feed for years and the last purchase we made, it was awful. It was hard as a rock and it has been very difficult to use. We constantly have to try to break it apart. All 3 bags were the same.

Q: Can I feed my senior underweight horse this plus alfalfa cubes and beet pulp?

2 Answers
  • Purina Product Expert
A: Equine Senior is easier for an older horse to chew and digest, for an underweight senior horse we would suggest this as the complete diet. This diet is a complete diet that contains 100% of the forage a horse needs per day. You can feed this as the sole diet to a horse without the need for hay and pasture or you can feed it with hay and pasture. When you are feeding Equine Senior as the sole diet then you would feed 1.3 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight or for a 1000 lb horse that is 13 lbs per day. If he is eating hay with this diet then for every 2 lbs of hay he consumes you can decrease the amount of Equine Senior by 1 lb or 0.6 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight. For a 1000 lb horse that would be 6 lbs. You should never go below 6 lbs of Equine Senior per day (for the average 1000lb horse) to insure the horse is receiving 100% of the vitamins, minerals and nutrients he needs per day. If your horse needs to gain weight you can increase the amount of feed by 10 to 15%. If you have done this then you can add additional Amplify to this diet to give her the extra calories she needs to gain and maintain her body condition.

Q: Do I need to soak this feed before giving it to my horse

  • Purina Product Expert
A: The product can be fed as is or soaked as needed per your horse's requirements. The easy soak pellet technology makes it a good choice for horses with compromised dentition.

Q: How much feed daily per horse

Anonymous9 months ago
1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: If feeding as a sole ration to replace forage the minimum is 1.3 lbs of Equine Senior per 100 lbs of body weight or 13 lbs for an average 1000 lb horse per day, split into at least 3 meals (preferably). If you are feeding with adequate (1-2% of body weight per day) good quality hay or pasture you need to feed a minimum of 0.6 lbs of Equine Senior per 100 lbs of body weight or 6 lbs for the average 1000 lb horse.

The quality of this feed has gone down hill the past year. One bag is moist and oily and the others are so dry my horse doesn’t care for it. I’m going to be looking at other feeds.
