Drawing from the heritage of producing previous mill/drills, the G0758 6" x 20" Mill/Drill comes packed with impressive features. The 3/4 HP motor powers the variable-speed spindle control from 50 to 2000 RPM and is displayed on a DRO. Tracking spindle depth is as easy as reading a separate DRO with inch/mm display and zeroing function. Additionally it has super-rigid precision-ground dovetail head column and table ways, coarse and fine spindle downfeed, and precision handwheel control for X, Y, and Z-axis. If that is not enough, this fiesty champ has one of the largest tables, table travel, and motor sizes in its class, allowing it to take on a huge range of workpiece sizes. With its R-8 spindle taper, it can also make use of a wide variety of tooling. The head is equipped with a special shifter knob that allows you to drop power-transfer gearing down for maximum torque in the lowest RPM range.

Strongly consider your needs.

I own two of these mills, the first one for many years and have over 2,000 hours on this one. Given my long experience with the G0758, I feel qualified to share some thoughts. The G0758 is a nice mill if you take into account its limitations. It is not large and fits nicely on a workbench. I have made very precision aluminum parts using it. It has opened up a world of being able to make customs connectors, brackets, flanges—stuff that you can’t find anywhere or that would cost a fortune from places like McMaster-Carr. I don’t even look for stuff that might work for my applications any more, I just make it instead. That said, the G0758 has a few limitations that you should be aware of before you purchase. It is a small mill and not designed for extreme duty. I wouldn’t even consider trying to machine steel with it unless I was prepared to take the lightest cuts to avoid stressing the drivetrain and gears. I consider aluminum to be within its capacity. I only use very sharp, replaceable bit carbide tooling, and I restrict my passes to about 0.0075”. Anything heavier and you are probably going to break something. The G0758 has nylon gears; I recommend you don’t change them, buy more (from Grizzly) instead for eventual day you wear or break the teeth. The first to go is likely to be the small gear the motor meshes with. If you’re chewing up this gear, you are pushing the mill too hard. It’s a design limitation meant to protect the rest of the drivetrain. Live with it, buy carbide tooling, and learn to take lighter cuts. The next concern is lubrication. There are a couple of lubrication ports on the G0758– one in the side of the head casting and another in the quill. These ports are inadequate to keep the mill fully lubricated. Be prepared to remove the top (motor) cover, unscrew the motor mounting plate (6 screws) and get lubrication into the upper bearings on a regular basis, after every several hours or after any significant period of non-use. One of the bearings is inaccessible, under that nylon gear—I drilled a 1/4” hole in that gear so I can get lubricants to the bearing under it. The next concern are the tapered roller bearings in the spindle. They should be repacked with grease every couple hundred hours of use or they will run dry and wear out, like mine did. I installed an hour meter on my G0758 to keep track of when to service bearings. This brings me to my final concern. To access the spindle bearings, you need a strong spanner wrench to remove this part: Grizzly QUILL SEAL, RUBBER (LOWER) SKU: P0758147. Despite what it says, it is a screw on metal nose cone, *not* rubber, as confirmed by Grizzly’s tech support. And it is out of stock, for months now. To access my noisy, work out spindle bearings, I had to use an impact driver to get this part off and damaged it in the process. No problem, I thought, Grizzly stocks parts. Unfortunately, this critical part isn’t currently available, so my G0758 is sitting in storage waiting for a replacement. Even knowing its limitations and parts availability, the G0758 is nice enough that I bought the “Z” version with DRO to use until the spindle nose cones are back in stock and I’m going to baby it—keeping it lubricated and never pushing it beyond its capacity. Having DRO takes the G0758 to another level and I highly recommend spending the extra $400 or so if you are considering this mill. And if the nose cones are never available again, I’ll pay to have a custom one fabricated so I can actually use it again. Hopefully this mill will be popular enough for Grizzly to keep all of the parts needed to service it in stock. If I was running a business with it, I’d be dead in the water. I consider it a good hobby mill, if you maintain it and can work within its limitations.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Dreams fulfilled

I've dreamed of having my own mill for 40 years. I just got this one and I'm happy with my decision. The mill is stiff and works well. The worst thing about the mill is the poor fitting spindle pin wrench which still works fine as it is. My first project was a flashlight gun and now I'm designing a series of pocket pistols. If you stay with the proper tool size and feed rates you will be very happy with your new Grizzly mill. Get one now and build something.
