Item Information

The Stickmate LX 235 AC/160 DC power sources lets you choose between AC or DC weld output to expand your welding options to either AC or DC stick electrodes. Although DC current offers welders a smoother arc with less spatter and better arc starts, the AC setting offers welders the ability to work on heavier steel with a top end of 235A.

  • 15 ft. electrode cable with heavy-duty holder, 10 ft. work cable with clamp and power cord with plug
  • Welds 1/8 in. up to 1/2 in. mild steel in a single pass
  • Operates off 230V input power
  • AC - 30 to 235 output Amperage, DC - 30 to 160 output Amperage
  • Duty cycle - AC 20% at 225 Amps, DC 20% at 150 Amps
  • Accu-Set Amperage indicator for accurately controlling amperage or heat output
  • Infinite current control allows output adjustments by as little as 1 A increments
  • Output selector switch - quickly select low or high range without adjusting the output leads
  • Manufacturers limited warranty

Hobart Stickmate LX 235AC/160DC is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 72.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good purchase This welder is a good AC/DC welder for the money. I enjoy welding on DC much better than on AC. The price was very good compared to the Lincoln AC/DC 225 tombstone welder.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hobart Stickmate LX 235AC/160DC After welding for 40 plus years professionally I believe I can reasonably report that the little Hobart LX 235ac/160dc is a respectable welding machine for the hobbyist or for farm repair work. Would prefer a higher duty cycle because if time on a project is a factor, one would be delayed due to the time necessary for the machine to be cooled appropriately. Longer welding leads would be much appreciated. I bought this machine because I wanted to have ac available even though the majority of my welding will be dc. Also, the reviews I read said that due to the way the inverter machines are made they cannot be used for an open root pass. Therefore, to be able to do the things I wanted to do, for the money this was the correct choice for me. If ones needs duplicate mine, I would recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good performance Bought to use as a home welder. Have run a few pounds of 7018 and 6011. Smooth and stable arc. Relatively light transformer welder. So far so good.

Thanks for the quick response. I have virtually always used 1/8 inch rods and prefer DC. I think that is what I would be using for most farm welding which is when I would use the generator.  What size generator would be needed for 160 DC and 1/8th rods?

Asked by: Stu5882
10Kw running watts recommended.

Does the dc part of this welder have hot start like your dc only welder?

Asked by: tracker7below
No, as it is a transformer based unit where the DC only unit is an inverter design with electronic control.

If i get the a 7500w generator that can use gas (7500w) and propane (6750w) will it run this welder reliably with no problem

Asked by: Matt454
That size generator will not run this unit to it's full output capabilities. You may be able to run the unit at a max setting of 100-120 amps, most 1/8" diameter rods. Any higher will most likely overload the generator and the Stickmate will not weld properly. To operate the unit at full would require a 12.5Kw running watt generator.

Does it run on 220 single phase or 3 phase

Asked by: Ol red
230 single phase input is required for this unit.

You say it has a 230v power requirement but what amp circuit to run this machine? Is it 50amp and what is the plug configuration?

Asked by: Ralph B
Yes, 50 amp circuit and with a NEMA 6-50 style plug. Receptacle needs to be purchased separately.

Can i run a suitcase mig welder off of it Cc/cv?

Asked by: Ln25
While you can connect a voltage sensing CC/CV feeder to this unit we do not recommend it. The Stickmate unit has a 20% duty cycle and no internal thermal safety shutdown. When running the wire feeder it would be easy to over-duty cycle the unit and damage the machine.

What size generator would be able to tun this welder without problems?

Asked by: BMWS
Any generator that can handle 230V output power and AC - 30 to 235 input Amperage, DC - 30 to 160 input Amperage.

This welder is rated a.c. dc but dose that mean dc positive and dc negative polarity. Also what is the largest electrode it can handle?

Asked by: Alfred1969
This is an AC/DC arc welder. AC maximum is 235 amp and DC is 160 amps. This will handle a maximum 5/32 diameter electrode depending on the type of rod and what polarity you have it set on.
