A powder-coat finish protects the chicken pen from wear and tear. The door is large for convenient access and features a 2-way locking latch. Compatible with most padlocks. Easy to assemble.

Q: What size tarp would I need to cover the roof of this 8 x 8 pen?

1 Answer
  • A: To cover the pitched roof of your Producer’s Pride Universal Poultry Pen (CR0808), you should use a 10 ft. x 10 ft. tarp. A 10 x 10 tarp gives you roughly 6 to 12 inches of critical overhang on all four sides. This allows rainwater and snow to drain away from the mesh walls rather than dripping directly into your flock's run

Solid cage but needs a few enhancements

The Producer's Pride Universal Poultry Pen is a very sturdy and solid cage. It has a robust feel to it and is heavy. The door and latch are solid. It would be a great choice for an animal kennel. Take note of some considerations when using it for birds: the gaps along the base and between panels are large. A chick or small bird would have no trouble escaping through these gaps (we lost one chick this way). Also, a rodent or snake would be able to get in through these gaps. You should wrap the lower half in chicken wire or mesh to add protection for small birds. However, for larger animals there shouldn't be any issues. I noticed dozens of people are asking about expandability of this cage. Producer's Pride really needs to sell additional panels...there is a HUGE demand for them but they are simply not available. You would need to purchase an entire additional pen unit if you wish to expand. It's unfortunate because there is obviously a demand for panels. This product would also greatly benefit from some covering options. A tarp covering is tacky and cheap. People purchasing this cage are looking for a superior product, so it should have appropriate accessories and options.

Rusty Waste of Money

Product began rusting at the 1.5 point. Vendor stated it should last at least 1 year corresponding with their warranty. Powder coating and rust resistant claims are misleading. At the 2.5 year point, the pen is so rusted we have concerns that it will not keep predators out. This product is poor quality for the price. Save your money and find a pen that lasts longer than 2.5 years.

Disappointment

I bought this on sale mostly because I thought it would save time and physical energy. That did not happen. TSC people were great. Product much less so. First multiple panels were damaged and I had to reload heavy panels, tie down a load and return/exchange those panels. The product went up pretty easily though getting the roof panels to perfectly align was difficult. Now for the real issue. TSC did not have a sample set up at the store and I failed to note just how huge some of the openings in the upper half of the wall panels were. They cheaped out and made the height of alternate openings double--plenty big for a young raccoon to squeeze in. Now I am looking at time consuming and expensive ways to aftermarket a fix. Some of the possibilities would cost more than the pen did! I expected to have to hardware cloth around the bottom and to fill the excessive gaps between panels. I did not expect to have to predator proof the ENTIRE supposedly predator proof pen. All because TSC decided to increase their profit margin by making every other opening above the horizontal pipe twice as high as is safe. WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN. Our previous decades old secure pen used wooden concrete set posts, 2x2 woven wire with plywood to protect the bottom and a quik-crete trench under the wire topped with concrete block edging. That was MUCH easier and cheaper at twice the size than this is proving to be and is what I should have repeated.
