Q: Is the food supposed to come out of the tiny hole? I have to shake the feeder to get food to come out. Or do the chickens learn to peck the hole?

It's pretty; it does what it is built to do, but the legs that hold the hopper to the feed tray are made of very thin sheet metal and will collapse if care is not taken when pushing the lid down after filling.
No, I do not recommend this product.
