Q: Is this weather proof

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: Thank you for contacting us. Regarding your question, this unit is not weatherproof. Since it is an electronic device, we recommend placing it under a roof or in a covered area to protect it. You may also use a specialized plastic enclosure for chargers to provide additional protection.

Q: Does this work with a ground fault interrupter outlet?

2 Answers
  • Woodstream Team
A: Thank you for your question! We want to make sure your electric fence energizer operates safely and reliably. We don’t recommend using this type of outlet with an AC energizer, as a ground fault interrupter (GFI/GFCI) outlet could trip when the energizer is operating. For the best performance, we recommend using a suitable standard outlet.

Q: What wire do you use

2 Answers
  • Woodstream Team
A: Thank you for your question! You can use a variety of wire types with this electric fence controller. The best choice depends on several factors, including the type of animal you're trying to contain or exclude, the length of your fence, and whether you're installing a temporary or permanent fence. Common options include high-tensile wire, aluminum wire, polywire, and polytape.

Q: Need help getting voltage up. It works but voltage is never over 3800 at the charger. 3 ground rods continuous 12ga wire in clay soil. Sanded rods and clamps. Any ideas? This one is in my training pen for pigs and I would prefer it hit a little harder

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: A reading of 3,800 volts at the fence can be caused by several factors, even with a good grounding system. Here are a few things to check: - Make sure all vegetation, weeds, or branches are cleared away from the fence wire, as they can reduce the voltage. - Disconnect the fence wire from the controller and test the output terminal directly. If the output is significantly higher with the fence disconnected, there is likely a load or short on the fence. - Verify that all fence connections, insulators, and splices are clean, tight, and free of damage. - Ensure the three ground rods are spaced at least 10 feet apart and installed fully into moist soil. The American Farm Works 0.1 J 5-Mile AC-Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Controller is designed for smaller fencing applications. Under ideal conditions, the fence voltage should typically be higher than 3,800 volts.

Q: Will it keep deer out?

2 Answers
  • Woodstream Team
A: Thanks for your question. We understand how important it is to make sure your fence system is strong enough to protect your property and keep deer out. In general, deer deterrence fences should maintain at least 5,000 volts on the fence line to be effective. Since the American Farm Works 5-Mile AC-Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Charger produces between 6,500 and 7,800 volts, it exceeds that recommended minimum by a comfortable margin. Assuming the fence is properly installed, well-grounded, and free from excessive vegetation contact, this energizer should provide enough voltage to effectively discourage deer from crossing the fence.

Q: Good morning, what controller is good for 2500 feet of wire and also to control deer?

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: For 2,500 feet of wire, the American Farm Works 0.1 Joule 5-Mile AC-Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Controller can be a suitable option, as the actual performance depends on factors like vegetation load and fence setup, not just wire length. For deer control, a low-impedance charger is recommended to deliver a strong pulse through the fence line. Be sure the fence is set up specifically for deer deterrence, with proper wire spacing and grounding for best performance.

Q: is this supposed to click? No sound at all. Can"t tell if it's working without touching the wire

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: Yes, this is normal. The American Farm Works 0.1 J 5-Mile AC-Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Controller may produce a faint clicking sound as it pulses, but some units operate very quietly, so you may not hear anything at all. To confirm it’s working, the best method is to use a fence tester or voltmeter designed for electric fences. This will safely show if voltage is present on the line without needing to touch the wire. Make sure the unit is plugged into a working outlet, the ground rod is properly installed, and all fence connections are secure, as these can affect performance.

No power

I have this on 900 ft of wire. I have a 6 foot copper ground rod sunk into a perpetually wet spot on my place. Was weak. So I also attached it to the ground rod for my breaker box on the side of my house and to the one for the power pole in my hard. All new insulators nothing touching. How weak is it? The grass is wet from a recent rain and I can stand barefooted and hold the wire. And I have to really concentrate to feel anything. Tried a piece of fencing wire and pliers and touched to positive wire at box and then over to ground. Nothing. My old box would actually make an arc like a spark plug. This one...nothing. I called the tractor supply I got it from and they wont refund replace. Even though I bought the protection plan and it's only been installed 3 hrs. And no it's not in the weather. It's in the dry.

Works great as intended

Read 50/50 reviews of this product, but I've owned mine now for 3 years and have had no issues. I set it up from May thru Sept. in my garden to keep raccoons out of my sweet corn. It works well. Also has kept out possums and cats. Also used two testers and both are reading 7000 to 8000 volts. Product description states it's 6000v. Not sure if this is a anomaly or I just got lucky.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Don't last

I've bought 2 of these 5 mile chargers and they only last 2-3 years and then stop working. My 2nd one just went out again and I'm going to try a different brand

We’re really sorry to hear that both of your 5-mile chargers stopped working after a couple of years. We understand how frustrating that is, especially when you rely on your fence for daily use.

All of our electric fence controllers are backed by a 3-year warranty, so your second unit may still be eligible for replacement. We’d really appreciate the opportunity to make this right for you. In many cases, we can quickly confirm warranty status and send a replacement once we receive a few details.

Please reach out to our customer support team at 1-855-592-7322, from Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 7 pm EST. One of our agents would be more than glad to assist you.
