The American Farm Works 2.2-Joule 60-Mile AC-Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Controller is used to contain livestock and exclude predators in locations that have access to AC power. Low impedance electric fence chargers have low internal resistance, which allows for increased joules on the fence line. This means that energy can push through weeds or vegetation to keep the fence hot. This electric fence controller powers a range of up to 60 miles of fencing, works in heavy weed conditions and can be used with all wire types, including high-tensile metal, polywire, polyrope and polytape. Whether intended for horses, pigs or other animals, this electric fence controller supplies the power you need to create a confident setup. For additional assurance, this American Farm Works electric fence charger is UL listed and backed by a 3-year limited warranty. Assembled in USA.

For additional information on this product, please see the Product Documents section for all downloadable user manuals, installation guides, brochures and warranty statements.

A: Thank you for contacting us. Electric fencing is one of the best defenses to deter bears, but no defense against bears is a fail-safe option. Bears can be an extremely dangerous animal, and electric fencing needs to be used in the context of other smart bear proofing strategies. Zareba® Systems and American Farm Works does not provide recommendations regarding bears and electric fencing, but for more information, view this article from the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game: https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=livingwithbears.bearfences

Q: How many amps does this energizer draw when on and also when the fence is shorted to ground

    1 Answer
    • Woodstream Team
A: The American Farm Works 2.2 J 60-Mile AC-Powered Energizer is rated by joule output, but the exact amp draw (normal operation vs. dead short to ground) is not listed in the published product specifications. For exact current draw values, we recommend contacting American Farm Works customer support, as that would be a technical engineering specification not included in the consumer product details.

Q: Will this work with a positive negative poultry netting with no ground rods?

    1 Answer
    • Woodstream Team
A: Thank you for contacting us. Regarding your question. No it will not, you still need a ground connection on the charger, even with positive/negative poultry netting. We always recommend at least three roads to ensure a good running system.

Q: What does stored Joules mean?

    1 Answer
    • Woodstream Team
A: “Stored joules” refers to the amount of energy the charger holds and can deliver in each pulse. A higher stored joule rating means the charger has more power available to push through longer fences or vegetation (like weeds touching the wire). This helps maintain an effective shock even when there’s some resistance on the fence line.

Q: I have chickens, with kune kunes, and horses. Coyotes come through our fencing in Southern Arizona to eat the chickens. Would this be suitable for the small farm?

    2 Answers
    • Woodstream Team
A: Yes, the American Farm Works 2.2-Joule 60-Mile AC-Powered Fence Charger is a strong option for a small farm setup like yours. It is designed to power long fence lines and is suitable for containing animals like horses and pigs, as well as deterring predators when the fence is set up correctly . For your situation (chickens, kune kunes, and coyotes), the charger has enough power, but effectiveness will depend on proper fence design such as correct wire spacing, grounding, and possibly adding lower wires to stop predators from getting under the fence. So yes, it can be suitable, especially for predator control, as long as the fence is installed and configured properly.

Q: Is this unit safe for people?

    Anonymous7 months ago
    1 Answer
    • Woodstream Team
A: The American Farm Works 2.2‑Joule 60‑Mile AC‑Powered Low Impedance Electric Fence Charger is designed to deliver a short, sharp pulse that deters animals on your fence line. It is safe when used as directed and when properly installed with good grounding and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The unit is UL-listed and built to meet safety standards, but it is meant to be part of an electric fence system, so anyone touching the live fence wire may receive a shock. Always follow the setup and safety guidance in the user manual to reduce risk when handling or working near the fence.

    Q: Is it waterproof?

    1 Answer
    • Woodstream Team
A: AC units installed outdoors should be protected from the elements. This can even be done by placing a bucket upside down over the charger. However, the charger should not be completely enclosed in a solid box, as this could cause it to overheat.

    This one does the job

My last fencer was a solar. I loved the solar option but the shock was weak and the battery wore out. My young horses started realizing that the shock would be weak at certain times. One day my young gelding, born on the farm and never experienced hardship, made direct eye contact with me and used his lip to pluck the fence wire. Repeatedly. I thought I better upgrade my fence charger. I found one with a great output joule # and pictures of wild animals on it like a wolf and moose. I was hoping to find a picture of a bear, but couldn’t seem to find one that strong. I installed this one and immediately heard the clicking. Hehehe. Later that day the gelding came to the fence and was clearly upset he wasn’t in the round pen with me. His whisker touched the wire. I have never seen a draft mix back up so fast that he sat down on his rear end. Fencer works great.

    Doesn't work

I bought it and connected it to one mile/3 strands of fence. It doesn't stop my horse from going through it. Not worth my money.

Excellent product, great value, would definitely recommend. I purchased this one when the old one at my barn quit working (it was old and just time to replace), got the same brand because the old one was so great. Glad I did! Works perfectly for my horse pasture.
