The Purina Layena Layer Pellets Poultry Feed is formulated with the optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. The laying hen feed is a 16% protein and high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age. This hen feed also includes our Oyster Strong System for strong shells and an additional source of calcium when the hens need it most. The system's proprietary blend of oyster shell and key vitamins and minerals helps ensure calcium will be available day and night when laying hens are forming egg shells, so they don't need to pull it from their bones. When you choose a complete layer feed with the Oyster Strong System, there is no need to provide supplemental oyster shell because the necessary calcium is included in every bite.

  • High level of xanthophyll in the chicken feed, a coloring agent derived from marigolds, produces deep yellow egg yolks
  • Oyster Strong System with calcium manganese and trace minerals for strong shells and additional source of calcium
  • Essential amino acids enhanced with lysine and methionine to give birds nutrients they need to produce plenty of wholesome and delicious eggs; also promotes beautiful feathering
  • High level of vitamin A in the poultry feed helps birds grow into healthy adult birds
  • Prebiotics, probiotics and yeast support immune and digestive health
  • Simple ingredients with no artificial by-products or fillers added, no artificial preservatives added, and no antibiotics or growth hormones added
  • Hen feed with 16% protein and high-calcium ration
  • Ideal feed for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age
  • Larger particle size than limestone, so oyster shell will stay in digestive tract longer
  • Available in a 25 lb. bag of hen feed pellets
  • Not to be fed to male birds of any age

I have been raising chickens and other poultry for over 40 years. In recent years, I had settled on Blue Seal feed products sold in the next town over; in additon to what the hens collected during free roaming and garden scraps I fed them. Although quite expensive, by comparison, I was satisfied with the Blue Seal feed products. The hens always laid well and produced a deep orange yolked egg. When Tractor Supply Co. opened in my town I was excited to have a local feed supply with convenient shopping hours. At first they didn't carry the Blue Seal product line, so I tried the DuMor poultry feeds starting in May 2012. DuMor was about $2 cheaper then what I was used to paying for. so great ( I thought). Around about June I noticed the yolks of the eggs had turned a bright yellow like the ones you buy in the store. One day I happened to ignore the price take time to read the Purina SunFresh Recipie bag and was immediately impressed with the no-meat products factor. Although more expensive than DuMor, I decided to try it. BINGO!!! In about two weeks, the yolks of my eggs returned to the deep orange color that I was used to. I also noticed an increase in egg production. Although Dumor is cheaper and they now carry Blue Seal feeds, I have decided to stay with the Purina Sun-Fresh Recipie. All I can say is you get what you pay for and you pay for what you want...In this case deep orange yolk eggs and lots of them.

Disappointed

I have fed Purina to my dogs, cats and now chickens. I have always been pleased with their products but not happy with their pellets. There are few pellets in this mix, it is mostly crumbles and the last few bags have been moldy. Even tried a different store and same problem. Poor quality control and production for their chicken feed lately. I'm switching to Nutrena Nature Wise, nice firm pellets and the gals love it. Their feathers are nice and they're eating this well.

Moldy food

I have bought the same Putin chicken food for two years and I’ve never had a problem with it until now. I just opened my most recently purchased bag and it is all clump together and molded. Very disappointing. I am now going to have to drive an hour one way to purchase another bag since this bag is not usable. Very disappointing and frustrating. I will probably not be purchasing purina layer pellets anymore and I am most likely going to take my business elsewhere.
