Q: Can you feed the Laying pellets to the rooster?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: For roosters, it's best to use Purina Flock Raiser. Roosters do not need the extra calcium found in layer feeds like Layena. In fact, feeding them a layer feed can shorten their lifespan and reduce their fertility, which would be counterproductive if you are trying to breed your birds.

Q: Will this feed harm the rooster?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: The calcium level and other vitamin and mineral levels in Layena meet the requirements of the laying hen. Your roosters should be on Purina Flock Raiser. Those guys don’t need all of the extra calcium in Layena. If you continue to feed a layer feed to your roosters, then you are going to shorten their life span and reduce their fertility, which defeats the purpose of trying to breed the birds.

Q: Can i start feeding my 18 week old hens purina layena pellets even if they have not started laying?

1 Answer
  • A: Hello! Yes, you can. Feed Purina Layena free-choice as the sole ration to laying chickens (including backyard egg producers, small to medium breeds and fancy and exotic breeds) after 18 weeks of age and throughout the laying cycle. Purina Layena can be fed to adult female chickens of laying age. Always provide shelter and a constant supply of fresh, clean water. Consumption will vary depending upon season of the year, nutritional needs of the animals and availability of other foods. Store in a dry, well-ventilated area free from rodents and insects. Never use moldy or insect-infested feed. A feeding program is only as effective as the management practices. Actual results can vary depending upon feed intake, environmental conditions and the quality of management practices.

Q: I’m being told by several folks who have chickens that slowed or stopped laying eggs to not buy Tractor Supply or Purina chicken feed.  There is some issue with the latest formula of feed that impacts egg production.  Can you tell me more about that?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi! The chicken feed TSC sells is produced and packaged by the industry’s leading suppliers who are passionate about animal health and nutrition. After careful review with them and industry experts in animal health and poultry care, it is clear that recent online commentary regarding these products is FALSE and unfounded.  Our suppliers have confirmed that there has been no change to the nutritional profile for these products. All contain key ingredients like protein and amino acids that support egg production. Products are correctly labeled, and no changes have been made to the guaranteed nutrients.  All chicken feed sold at Tractor Supply meets National Research Council nutritional standards for laying hens, using only approved, inspected and tested ingredients. We only sell foods that meet these high and rigorous standards. Many factors contribute to lower-than-normal egg production in winter months, most notably fewer daylight hours and colder weather conditions. Supplemental lighting and heat have been found to be beneficial to poultry in minimizing these natural effects on egg production. Also, some breeds are “seasonal layers.” They will simply stop laying during wintertime. I have been raising chickens and other poultry for over 40 years. In recent years, I had settled on Blue Seal feed products sold in the next town over; in additon to what the hens collected during free roaming and garden scraps I fed them. Although quite expensive, by comparison, I was satisfied with the Blue Seal feed products. The hens always laid well and produced a deep orange yolked egg. When Tractor Supply Co. opened in my town I was excited to have a local feed supply with convenient shopping hours. At first they didn't carry the Blue Seal product line, so I tried the DuMor poultry feeds starting in May 2012. DuMor was about $2 cheaper then what I was used to paying for. so great ( I thought). Around about June I noticed the yolks of the eggs had turned a bright yellow like the ones you buy in the store. One day I happened to ignore the price take time to read the Purina SunFresh Recipie bag and was immediately impressed with the no-meat products factor. Although more expensive than DuMor, I decided to try it. BINGO!!! In about two weeks, the yolks of my eggs returned to the deep orange color that I was used to. I also noticed an increase in egg production. Although Dumor is cheaper and they now carry Blue Seal feeds, I have decided to stay with the Purina Sun-Fresh Recipie. All I can say is you get what you pay for and you pay for what you want...In this case deep orange yolk eggs and lots of them.

Disappointed

I have fed Purina to my dogs, cats and now chickens. I have always been pleased with their products but not happy with their pellets. There are few pellets in this mix, it is mostly crumbles and the last few bags have been moldy. Even tried a different store and same problem. Poor quality control and production for their chicken feed lately. I'm switching to Nutrena Nature Wise, nice firm pellets and the gals love it. Their feathers are nice and they're eating this well.

Mold in chicken feed?

Unfortunately every time I get this from the store (from two different locations) it is like this… mold on top and throughout the entire bag… I wouldn’t complain if it was something that happened once but it’s happened multiple times. I’ll likely just have to change brands but I feel this is a problem that should be addressed… Maybe it’s just the store locations near me though? I let tractor supply and also the brand that makes the product both know just in case. The bag in the photo was freshly opened and bag was dry as well…

No, I do not recommend this product.
