Item Information

Purina Layena Pellets Premium Layer Feed is formulated with the optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. This chicken feed is a 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age.

Purina Layena includes our Oyster Strong System for strong shells. Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Oyster shell is a larger particle size than limestone. This means that oyster shell will stay in the digestive tract longer and will provide a source of calcium for egg shell production over a longer period of time than smaller particle sources of calcium. This is especially important at night when egg shell formation is rapidly occurring and dietary sources of calcium are limited because the bird is not eating.

  • Rich yellow yolks - A high level of xanthophyll, a coloring agent derived from marigolds, produces deep yellow egg yolks
  • Calcium Manganese and Trace Minerals - Strong shells
  • Essential Amino Acids - Enhanced with lysine and methionine to give birds the nutrients they need to produce plenty of wholesome and delicious eggs; Also promotes beautiful feathering
  • Key Levels of Vitamin A, D, E - Strong reproduction and overall health, a high level of Vitamin A helps birds grow into healthy adult birds
  • Prebiotics, Probiotics and Yeast - supports immune and digestive health
  • Simple ingredients - recipe has no artificial by-products or fillers added, no artificial preservatives added, no antibiotics or growth hormones added

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purina Layer Pellets I've been using the Purina Layena Pellets for a couple of months now and I've seen improvement in the health of my birds and the quality of the eggs. I like that it contains oyster shell because even though I offer oyster shell, alone, to the birds, I notice some of them never go over to that feeder. With PLP, I know everyone is getting some. I also like the pelleted version of the feed because even if they kick it out of their feeder, it holds its shape and doesn't get stomped into the dirt.

You said the feed already contains Diatomaceous Earth, do I need to give additional Diatomaceous Earth to worm them ?

Asked by: Rock2003
You should discuss the worming program with your veterinarian. The DE in the product is included in an ingredient we use, not added as part of the formulation.

Is this a medicated feed? Can I start gradually introducing this product to my three week old ducklings?

Asked by: sherriff
Thanks for choosing Purina. The product is a layer product and is not suitable for ducklings, but can be fed to them if they are of laying age. Do not feed this to ducklings that are three weeks old. You will want to keep them on the Purina Flock Raiser.

How much feed per day? pounds per chicken?. I have 16 Rhode Island Reds. Curious on portions for this feed.

Asked by: a1993
Thanks for choosing Purina. The average amount consumed for an adult hen will be 0.25 lbs./day (1/4 lb./day for 16 birds will be ~ 4 lbs. total each day). This varies according to breed and also environment. You should feed them free choice; allowing access to a feeder at all times.

We are looking for a large bag of inexpensive duck food that will float so that we can feed the ducks in the pond behind our house.  Would you recommend this product for that purpose?

Asked by: Mtor7102
Purina would not recommend this product for that purpose.

Is this a non gmo product

Asked by: organic1
The Purina Layena does contain soybean meal and ground corn and these may be GMO derived. We have the Purina Organic Poultry products (scratch, layer, starter/grower) these will be non-GMO. To be certified organic, they also have to be non-GMO.

Is this safe for my rooster?

Asked by: Annet66
According to the vendor, this is not something they suggest for roosters due to it having the higher calcium percentage that roosters do not need. They suggest Flock Raiser as a better alternative.
