Feed Purina Layena free-choice as the sole ration to laying chickens (including backyard egg producers, small to medium breeds and fancy and exotic breeds) after 18 weeks of age and throughout the laying cycle. Purina Layena can be fed to adult female chickens of laying age. Always provide shelter and a constant supply of fresh, clean water. Consumption will vary depending upon season of the year, nutritional needs of the animals and availability of other foods. Caution: Store in a dry, well-ventilated area free from rodents and insects. Never use moldy or insect-infested feed. Important: A feeding program is only as effective as the management practices. Actual results can vary depending upon feed intake, environmental conditions and the quality of management practices.

Q: I raise worms for vermiculture. Will this harm nightcrawlers?

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. This feed is formulated for use with chickens, so we cannot recommend using it for worms or other vermiculture purposes. For the health and safety of your nightcrawlers, stick to foods specifically intended for composting or worm bins, such as vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and other plant-based materials.

Q: Can I feed my flock of adult hens the 18% Chick Grow feed?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: You can feed that product but it is formulated for growth and will not meet calcium needs for egg production so you will want to supplement with Oyster Shell as well. A layer feed is a better option for laying hens.

Q: Can you feed to male birds?

2 Answers
  • Purina Product Expert
A: The calcium level and other vitamin and mineral levels in Layena meet the requirements of the laying hen. Your roosters should be on Purina Flock Raiser. Those guys don’t need all of the extra calcium in Layena. If you continue to feed a layer feed to your roosters, then you are going to shorten their life span and reduce their fertility, which defeats the purpose of trying to breed the birds. Feeding two different diets to a mixed flock can be a challenge. This is even more complicated with bantams. With a standard size bird, the roosters tend to be much larger than the hens, so you can put out a separate feeder with Flock Raiser and elevate it so that he can get to it but the hens can’t. There is less of a height difference in the bantam breeds, so this is a bigger challenge. One interesting thing about chickens is that they will eat to meet their nutrient requirements. With both Flock Raiser and Layena available to the flock, the hens will likely stick to Layena to get the calcium that they need for egg production while the rooster will stick to Flock Raiser because Layena has too much calcium in it. Your last option is to feed everybody Flock Raiser and put out a separate feeder that has oyster shell in it for the ladies to get the extra calcium that they need. And, here is an article we have linked up online. https://www.purinamills.com/chicken-feed/education/detail/what-do-roosters-eat-tips-for-raising-roosters-in-a-backyard-flock

Q: Is this good for laying quail

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: If you are going to house males and females together, then my suggestion would be to feed Game Bird Flight Conditioner and put out a separate feeder with oyster shell in it for the females to get the extra calcium that they need. Be sure that the oyster shell being used is small enough for the quail to eat it comfortably. Only coturnix quail will start laying eggs at 6 weeks. All other quail will wait until they are around 20 weeks old to start laying eggs.
