Item Information

Purina Layena Crumbles Premium Layer Feed is formulated with the optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs.

  • A 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age
Now with Oyster Strong System for strong shells. Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Oyster shell is a larger particle size than limestone. This means that oyster shell will stay in the digestive tract longer and will provide a source of calcium for egg shell production over a longer period of time than smaller particle sources of calcium. This is especially important at night when egg shell formation is rapidly occurring and dietary sources of calcium are limited because the bird is not eating.
  • Added Marigold Extract for rich yellow yolks - A high level of xanthophyll, a coloring agent derived from marigolds, produces deep yellow egg yolks
  • Calcium Manganese and Trace Minerals: Strong shells
  • Essential Amino Acids: Enhanced with lysine and methionine to give birds the nutrients they need to produce plenty of wholesome and delicious eggs; Also promotes beautiful feathering
  • Levels of Vitamin A, D, E

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poof! Ok. So here's the deal - Normally if I haven't anything nice to say I try to keep my mouth shut. Since I haven't learned my lesson just yet..,I'm gonna write this review. We've purchased Purina crumbles many times in past & all was fine. About 6 or 7 months ago we noticed it was more powder than crumble. The last 4 bags we've bought have been ALL powder. This might be the fault of Tractor Supply or the transportation process to the store, I wouldn't know. Nonetheless, my husband is tired of the dust cloud it creates while filling feed bins. Prior quality was great & my girls have always layed tasty eggs. However, they refuse pellets which means I'll have to find better crumble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and the chickens love it! I switched my feed to Purina Layena Crumbles Premium Layer Feed 2 months ago. I have a mixed flock of hens and roosters and they all love this feed. Egg production is eggcellent and the roosters seem to love the feed as well.

is it ok for my roosters to eat?

Asked by: leathers
Thanks for your question. We suggest the Purina Flock Raiser is better suited for the roosters since they do not need the additional calcium which is in the Layena formulation.

Does purina have a medicate layena crumbles? Or is the start and grow the only feed that comes with the choice?

Asked by: Grace7100
The Layena products will not be medicated. The Start and Grown and Flock Raiser have both medicated and non-medicated options available. Be certain to check the tag to determine what you have purchased.

I house Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and Brahma hens together but I also have 2 Brahma roosters in with them. Will it be harmful to the Roos if they eat the layer feed? I don’t know how to go about feeding them something different.

Asked by: Kscarlson56
Thanks for choosing Purina. We have a link on our website which discusses rooster feeding suggestions. They do not need the additional calcium that we have formulated in the layer feed. Click on the link below to read more about how we suggest raising the rooster's food if not able to separate from the flock.

I have a hen that is about 5 years old and hasn't laid an egg in awhile, is this kind of feed OK for a current non-layer? It says it supports healthy immune system which is another reason I want to purchase this kind.

Asked by: Xiomara
If your hen is no longer laying, you will be better to switch to a product that is lower in calcium such as the non-medicated Start & Grow or the non-medicated Flock Raiser. These both support a healthy immune system as well.

Is it necessary to feed my layers oyster shell if I use

Asked by: George 1
Thanks for choosing Purina. As long as you are feeding Layena to provide 90% or more of thier total diet, there is no need to supplement with oyster shell. The calcium level is high enough to meet their laying needs. Keep table scraps and scratch grain to a 10% or less of diet and you will be fine.
