Q: I have full grown birds and 10 week old chicks. I am currently trying to integrate the flock, can the full grown birds eat this feed with a supplement of oyster shell offered to them as well?

1 Answer
  • A: Thanks for choosing Purina. Yes, the layers are able to consume the starter/grower product. You will want to do as you mentioned and offer them free choice crushed oyster shell to meet the calcium requirement. Once your younger birds begin laying, you may transition all of them back to one of our Layena products.

Q: Hi can a cock/rooster feed on this too? I assume I won't know if its a rooster or hen when its a chick so just curious if I can feed the rooster on this too?

1 Answer
  • A: There is no issue with either as far as the chick starter is concerned. Once the females are old enough for Layena you will want to put the Non-laying chickens and roosters on Flock Raiser.

Q: I have chicks and ducklings. I was wondering if ducks can eat this also.

1 Answer
  • A: Thanks for reaching out to us regarding your ducklings nutritional needs. We would not suggest Start & Grow for the ducklings. The non-medicated Flock Raiser is the best Purina product for the ducks or mixed flock (ducks, chicks, geese and/or turkeys 6 weeks or older).

Q: Dear the experts, how many bags(Purina Start & Grow, 50 lb) do I have to buy for 10 chicks?

1 Answer
  • A: Thanks for contacting Purina! We suggest to feed the Start & Grow until the chicks are of laying age. This is typically between 18-20 weeks of age. One chick will eat about 15 lbs. from hatch until laying age. With 10 chicks, you will probably feed approximately 150 lbs. of product.

Great food!

We bought this after being disappointed with other starter feeds that looked like corn dust. This looks and smells great, lilke grape nuts! All our girls love it and the rabbits eat it too.

Won't buy again, going to request refund.

I bought this because I was expecting the chicks and it was available. I figured that the chicks all had diarrhea for the first week from the extra stress from shipping. I was constantly cleaning up pasty butt and this is the worst it has ever been. Nearing the end of the bag, I purchased another bag of starter from my local feed store and within a day the diarrhea cleared up! There is a huge difference between the quality of the feed from my local feed store vs the Purina which is mostly crushed powder, vs feed store is uniform crumbles (not powder)

It works

It’s a struggle to connect the bottom to the top . You need more hands than you were born with. 2 to hold the water container and 2 to line up the tabs and twist the base on . Other than that it’s great , holds water and no leaks.

Great product

I saw other reviews about this coming out mostly powdered. This was not my experience with this brand. I've purchased multiple bags so far. Our chickens are flourishing, they love the feed and it is actually very little powder; just a bit at the bottom that can't be avoided.
