Feed your backyard flock with the Purina Flock Raiser Pelleted Feed. These poultry feed pellets provide complete and balanced nutrition for healthy flocks. Sustain an entire mixed flock of poultry, including growing hens, roosters, ducks, and geese. It can help birds through molt or times when feathering needs some extra support. Purina Flock Raiser Chicken Feed is also for pheasants, quail, and turkeys after 8 weeks of age and older - all with the same bag of nutrient-rich, pelleted feed. This poultry feed is enhanced with lysine and methionine amino acids to help chicks and pullets with muscle and skeletal development. Comes in a 50 lb. bag of chicken feed.

Q: Is the crumbles feed better than your Layena for my 6 month old laying hens?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: If you only have hens in your flock, we would suggest feeding a Layena or layer feed product to ensure you are meeting their nutrient requirements. If you have a mixed flock or hens and roosters then the Flock Raiser is a good choice and be sure to offer free choice oyster shell to them for calcium requirements.

Q: Do I need to offer grit as well?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: Thank you for choosing Purina! Birds being fed a commercial diet like ours, do not need grit. If you start treating them with scratch grains (which we don't recommend introducing until they are 18 weeks old) then grit would help them process it a little more easily. Here is a great article we have on Do Chickens Need Grit? that I think you may find interesting.

Please stock Purina Flock Raiser pellets in store!

My 5 star rating is for the product itself - I really like the Purina Flock Raiser Pellets vs the Flock Raiser crumbles, I think there is much less waste with the pellets. The other "flock raiser" brand that TSC sells has less protein (16% vs 20% for the Purina) and my girls need the higher protein right now because of the molting stage. I don't know why but the Purina Flock Raiser pellets are really hard to find in-store or online and if I do find it availalble online then I end up paying almost half the cost of the order just to ship it. I don't know why Purina and TSC don't work something out so this product can either be sold in stores, or at least shipped to a local TSC store for free.

Bag description

The bag doesn't specify after eight weeks. On the chart it states up to laying. They love it but I think 20% protein is too much for ducks. They should only have 16%.

I switched form the Purina Layena to the Flock Raiser and saw results in a few days. Egg production increased dramatically. The higher protein had my hens almost double the eggs I was getting from them.
