Jostaberry is a cross between the black currant and gooseberry but is more vigorous than either parent. It is disease resistant and self-pollinating! It looks just like a gooseberry until it turns nearly black & ripens. This delicious berry is excellent for eating fresh or for use in jam, juice, wine, and cordials. Jostaberry is a dormant plant selected by DeGroot, offering you the opportunity to get a head start to the season! Due to its dormant state, this plant may lack foliage until it is planted. There is no need to wait until after frost, this may be planted as soon as the ground is workable. This early planting prevents transplant shock and allows it more time to develop its root system. If your plant does have foliage, provide protection from frost. Depending on the climate and weather experienced after planting, this plant could take up to 4-6 weeks to break dormancy and show signs of growth. Q: I live in Massachusetts where currents are restricted because of their ability to propagate white pine blister rust. Is this product legal here and does it require a permit as is necessary for growing red currants?

A promising Jostaberry shrub!

This little, dried up bag of dirt with a stick in it that was sitting dormant on a shelf for who knows how long is growing with gusto and should turn into a really nice berry bush in no time. Planted in full sun with processed manure, mulched and watered daily it has sprouted beautiful leaves within days of planting. This photo is the plant less than 2 weeks later. I also got 2 Goji plants which are also sprouting nicely with the same care as the Jostaberry. I will leave a review for those, as well. Definitely give these little dormant plants a chance, but don't forget to water water water them EVERY DAY until they are well established!!! I love these bagged plants!

I bought several bare root plant/trees from Tractor Supply this year. When I first bought some plants they had just put them out in the store and they were all all still dormant. I went back about two weeks later and bought additional including the Jostaberry and saw many plants had come out of dormancy in the store so I had to plant my new purchases in pots because it is still too cold in my area to put anything outside that was leafing out. The Jostaberry had a great root system and when I put it in the pot it exploded with growth so I'm sure its going to do great when we are past the risk of frost and I put it in the ground.
Overall, my experience with various plants I bought is great as they all had good root systems and the ones that have come out of dormancy look to be thriving with the Jostaberry being the standout. I see a lot of bad reviews on the Tractor Supply bare root plants which I'm sure is because they come out of dormancy in the warm stores and then die before people buy them later in the spring. Based on that, I would avoid buying them too late in spring and/or if they have dead buds/leaves on them or in the packaging.
