Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Chicken Breed so Far I purchased these about a week back, shipped on Wednesday and arrived on Saturday. I picked them up first thing in the morning at the post office and took them home to put under a heat lamp. One pullet was dead on arrival, leaving me with 5 cockerels and 4 pullets. Come Sunday morning, I am down another 3 leaving me with 5 cockerels and 1 pullet. As of the time of this review Monday, I awake to find another one of my chicks dead with one clearly about to go the same way. I thought these birds were cold hardy and heat hardy, but they are not a very tough breed. I have purchased Buckeyes and ISA Browns from tractor supply and those breeds were a lot more resilient than this breed. So if your like me thinking you will have a good survival rate with this breed think again. And if you want a lot of pullets buy straight up pullets from the get go because I got 5 and 5 from the start with only 1 pullet remaining.

Asked by: Debbie01
Yes they will. They are raised as breeders in similar climates and the nature of the genetics stand cold and warm both

Sapphire Gems are known for their great coloration and laying ability and are a moderate eating bird. Rainbows and the Asian Black birds are better know for dual purpose

Would they tolerate a cold Vermont winter? I use heat lamps when the night temp is 10-15 degrees.

Asked by: Cara12
Yes, all breeds can handle hot and cold weather. As long as the birds are fully feathered and juvenile or adult they will generate enough heat to keep warm if kept in an area that is out of the direct elements and wind. Heat lamps can be used as you mention

How can you tell the males from females...ours are about 15 weeks old and we think we may have a Male but not sure we have 2 that are much more developed and larger than the rest of the flock.

Asked by: KimSantos
AT 15 weeks the wattles and combs of a rooster will be definable and they should start crowing.

Are the chicks vaccinated before they are shipped?

Asked by: Anonymous007
Chicks are not vaccinated before they are shipped to allow for all consumers to choose the feed they wish for chicks. Medicated feed may be purchased for cocci protection. If Mareks vaccine is needed you may call 641-323-6100 with questions

We have a Dominique rooster. Will he be too big for this breed? We have him with a few ISA Browns.

Asked by: Lea n
Dominique roosters will not be too big for the Sapphire Gem as long as you do not put them together until the babies are fully feathered. As adults, the Sapphires are usually bigger then ISA Browns
