Frequently Asked Questions About Gasket Maker

For most covers, pans and flanges, yes. Form-in-place compounds are built to stand in for pre-cut gaskets entirely. Cross-check the product's application list against your joint material and the fluid it will contact before installing.
RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing, meaning the compound cures on its own at normal shop or garage temperatures.

Gasket Maker

A leaking engine joint often goes unnoticed until you spot fluid on the floor or a component runs dry. Gasket makers provide a reliable seal for these joints, bonding directly to metal, aluminum and other surfaces. They fill gaps that rigid pre-cut gaskets may not be able to handle, ensuring a more effective and lasting fix. Tractor Supply carries gasket maker solutions designed for the range of repairs that come with working engines and equipment

Sealing Solutions for Heavy-Duty Assemblies

Gasket makers are a specialized class of adhesives and sealants that seal two joined surfaces inside engines and mechanical assemblies. The compound fills the small gaps between two surfaces where fluids and pressure would otherwise escape.

Most products come in squeeze tubes ranging from 1.5-12 oz., with cartridge-style applicators for larger or more involved jobs. The basic process is consistent across all of our formulas: clean the surface, apply a bead around the joint, assemble the parts and let the compound cure before putting anything back into service.

High-Temp RTV Silicone Compounds

High-temp RTV silicone is built for engine parts that run hot, rated to hold its seal between -65 and 650 degrees Fahrenheit in short bursts of high heat. It's commonly used on valve covers, water pumps and thermostat housings, where heat and vibration wear down a seal over time. The silicone won't crack or break down from regular contact with automotive fluids and chemicals. Most tubes are 3 oz., which is enough for a single repair on a standard cover or flange.

Black, Gray and Red Formula Options

Color coding on gasket maker tubes isn't cosmetic – it tells you what the formula is designed to handle. Black silicone covers the widest range of general automotive and equipment jobs, holding up to 300 PSI without specialized requirements. Gray is the sensor-safe option, which matters on modern engines where the wrong compound near an oxygen sensor can cause false readings. Red carries the highest temperature rating in the silicone line, so it holds up on exhaust components and around surfaces that have been freshly painted or restored.

Gasket makers seal joints that prevent oil, coolant and combustion pressure from escaping. Choosing the right formula means considering three factors: how hot the joint runs, what fluid it will contact and whether the engine requires a sensor-safe compound. Getting that match right is what makes a repair last, and our selection covers all needs. Shop our gasket maker formulas on our website or at your local Tractor Supply store.
