Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only feed my girls will eat I wanted to switch from crumble, because I felt there was so much waste of their food. They would scratch it out and it wouldn't be edible at that point. Switched to this because of the small pellets (they hated the larger pellet options I tried). The girls eat this no problem, less mess, and I saw a significant increase to egg production. So - less waste, less mess - and MORE eggs! win win for us!

why sodium and salt? how do these benefit the chickens?

Asked by: Famous65
Sodium is a required nutrient for all animals, including all poultry species. Deficiency of sodium (main source being salt, which is 39.3% sodium and 60.7% chloride) may result in reduced feed intake, depressed growth, lower egg weight and lower egg production as well as some behavior issues. If you remove all salt from a diet, egg production would be expected to drop or stop completely in 2-3 weeks and you would see some abnormal behavior. The range for sodium in layer feeds is a bit narrower than some other species, primarily because higher levels of sodium can result in wet litter. This is more of an issue in commercial poultry feeds than backyard flocks.

Does this product contain oyster shells?  If not should it be added to the diet for laying hens?

Asked by: prince charm
Hello, Thank you for the question. None of the NatureWise feeds contain oyster shell. We always recommend putting out oyster shell separately, free choice, as your girls will consume it as needed. Thank you!
