Q: Is this high in calcium

1 Answer
  • AI-generated, Human-approved
A: No, the calcium in this game bird starter is not sufficient to support egg production. It is formulated with a specific calcium to phosphorus balance intended for strong bone development in young birds rather than the high calcium levels required for laying hens.

Q: How long can you store this

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your question. This feed does not have a specific expiration date listed by the manufacturer beyond standard storage guidance. For best quality and nutrition, we recommend using it within 3–6 months of opening when stored in a cool, dry place and kept tightly sealed. Feed that becomes wet, moldy, or insect-infested should not be used.

Q: Is this feed recommended for quail

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: Coturnix quail should be fed Game Bird Starter from hatch to six weeks. At six weeks, the females should switch to Game Bird Breeder as they will start laying eggs. The males should continue on Game Bird Flight Conditioner. All other quail should start on Game Bird Starter for 6 weeks and then switch to Game Bird Flight Conditioner until 20 to 24 weeks when the females start laying eggs. When you start to see eggs, then it is time to transition. The males should remain on Game Bird Flight Conditioner. When the females stop laying eggs for the season, you can move everyone to Game Bird Maintenance to keep the birds from gaining too much weight in the off-season. You would switch them back to their laying diet in the spring when they return to production.

Q: Can this food be fermented?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: You can ferment any feed, however it is not recommended. The nutrition in the feed meets the nutrient requirements of the birds as it is. When you ferment it, you change the nutrient profile of the feed so it is no longer meeting the nutrient requirements of the birds. Plus, do you know what bacteria that you are growing? Is that bacteria good for your birds?

Q: Can silkie chicks have this or is it to much protein?

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: We would not suggest Game Bird and Turkey Feed for Silkies. Our suggestion would be Purina Start and Grow feed until they are at least 18 weeks of age, depending on the sex/future goals switching them to a layer ration like Layena for hens that will be laying or Purina Flock Raiser if they are roosters.

No bugs in this package

This package was free of bugs, that's a relief...30% protein, what i needed for our quails. Only drawback of this product ( and a major one for us) is if you use it straight for laying quails, it makes the eggs taste like fish! We use it for our chicks and for layers, we mix 50% this product and 50% Layena. Giving our quail an average of 24% PROTEIN. It works.
