Q: I have 2 Smokey Pearls , about 8 weeks old. One is kind small with yellow feet and pink comb. The other is considerably larger with greenish gray feet and gray comb. Both healthy and pretty. Do I have a cockerel? And pullet? or can they both be pullets?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Please send us photos to sales@hoovershatchery.com and we can help identify if you actually have both of the same breed and if you have a rooster.

  • Tony
A: Smoky Pearl hens are great producers of Large Brown Eggs at the rate of around 280 per year or about 5-6 eggs per week.

Q: Same question. I’m trying to sex a couple 9 week Smokey pearls. They are looking and acting like roosters. Can I send a pic for an ID. Thanks!

  • Tony
A: Please send photos to sales@hoovershatchery.com and we can review these for you. Smokey Pearls are a hybrid white egg layer so they do develop a bit faster than other breeds and have a larger comb but we would be happy to look at yours to help!

Q: I have two Smoky Pearls that were labelled as pullets. At 8 weeks, they both have large red combs and wattles. Do I need to be prepared to re-home them as roosters? It seems early for comb/wattle development.

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Smokey Pearls are a leghorn cross so they do have more pronounced combs and tend to mature more quickly than some of the other breeds. If you would like to send us photos we can take a look at them and see, but if they are not crowing they are most likely females at this point. Photos can be sent to sales@hoovershatchery.com.

Q: How can I tell if I ended up with a rooster. They were all labeled pullets, but I'm a bit nervous one of mine is a boy. I know there's a 10% chance of that unless their sex linked. Can't find any information online about them.

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Usually around 4-6 weeks of age the rooster or male chicks with begin to get a deeper red color to their comb and wattles. And of course...if they start crowing - or trying to crow - that is a pretty accurate indicator.

Q: how hardy are they to cold and heat? are they considered a quiet chicken?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: With adequate shelter from the most extreme cold and heat the Smokey Pearls are extremely hardy. In our harsh Iowa winters they do well and the humid summer heat doesn't bother them either. They are average on the noise, and not overly boisterous.

Q: What age do Smokey Pearl hens start laying eggs?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Smokey Pearls should begin laying around 24 weeks of age as long as they have adequate daylight hours. 14-16 hours is recommended to get the internal clock started for egg production.

Q: What are the breeds used to create the Smokey Pearl?

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: We are not able to share that exact information but I can tell you that they are a cross between a high production white layer and a brown layer.

Picked up on a Friday and two dead by Sunday. Remaining 8 are being treated for bumble foot and one barely hanging on. The other 30 (different breeds) are all fine

Bought at TS store

I picked up 8 of these 3 months ago (straight run) along with 2 RIR that were labeled pullets. Both of the RIR's & 1 of the Smokey Pearls turned out to be roos. I ended up with 3 different coloring/feather patterns. 2 are completely white, 3 are the lightest shade of gray, & 3 are like a splash (black & white). They all have different colored legs & their body sizes/shape are not uniformed either. Even though they were raised & treated the same, the all white ones get startled with a drop of a hat, the black & white ones are very reserved & standoffish, and the light gray ones want to be closest to me as possible & love attention. I know chickens have there own unique personalities but it's kinda weird how their attitudes line up with their coloration.

Yes, I recommend this product.
