Q: All of my smoky pearls have gray legs and combs and wattles, is this normal for the breed?
3 years ago- A: Yes! This is normal for this hybrid breed.3 years agoHelpful?
Q: I have 2 Smokey Pearls , about 8 weeks old. One is kind small with yellow feet and pink comb. The other is considerably larger with greenish gray feet and gray comb. Both healthy and pretty. Do I have a cockerel? And pullet? or can they both be pullets?
4 years ago- A: Please send us photos to sales@hoovershatchery.com and we can help identify if you actually have both of the same breed and if you have a rooster.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: I got three Smoky pearls from tractor supply, along with three others. Sadly one of my smoky pearls turned out to be a rooster so I rehomed him, the others are growing fast. & I was wondering On average how many eggs a week do they have?
4 years ago- A: Smoky Pearl hens are great producers of Large Brown Eggs at the rate of around 280 per year or about 5-6 eggs per week.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: Same question. I’m trying to sex a couple 9 week Smokey pearls. They are looking and acting like roosters. Can I send a pic for an ID. Thanks!
4 years ago- A: Please send photos to sales@hoovershatchery.com and we can review these for you. Smokey Pearls are a hybrid white egg layer so they do develop a bit faster than other breeds and have a larger comb but we would be happy to look at yours to help!4 years agoHelpful?
Q: I have two Smoky Pearls that were labelled as pullets. At 8 weeks, they both have large red combs and wattles. Do I need to be prepared to re-home them as roosters? It seems early for comb/wattle development.
4 years ago- A: Smokey Pearls are a leghorn cross so they do have more pronounced combs and tend to mature more quickly than some of the other breeds. If you would like to send us photos we can take a look at them and see, but if they are not crowing they are most likely females at this point. Photos can be sent to sales@hoovershatchery.com.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: What color legs should Smokey park hens have?
4 years ago- A: Smokey Pearl hens have clean orange legs.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: How can I tell if I ended up with a rooster. They were all labeled pullets, but I'm a bit nervous one of mine is a boy. I know there's a 10% chance of that unless their sex linked. Can't find any information online about them.
4 years ago- A: Usually around 4-6 weeks of age the rooster or male chicks with begin to get a deeper red color to their comb and wattles. And of course...if they start crowing - or trying to crow - that is a pretty accurate indicator.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: how hardy are they to cold and heat? are they considered a quiet chicken?
4 years ago- A: With adequate shelter from the most extreme cold and heat the Smokey Pearls are extremely hardy. In our harsh Iowa winters they do well and the humid summer heat doesn't bother them either. They are average on the noise, and not overly boisterous.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: What age do Smokey Pearl hens start laying eggs?
4 years ago- A: Smokey Pearls should begin laying around 24 weeks of age as long as they have adequate daylight hours. 14-16 hours is recommended to get the internal clock started for egg production.4 years agoHelpful?
Q: What are the breeds used to create the Smokey Pearl?
4 years ago- A: We are not able to share that exact information but I can tell you that they are a cross between a high production white layer and a brown layer.4 years agoHelpful?
