The Hoover's Hatchery Bielefelder chickens are a striking dual-purpose breed recently imported from Bielefeld, Germany. Developed by poultry breeder Gerd Roth, these birds were created by crossing New Hampshires, Malines, Amrocks, and Wyandottes to produce a true auto-sexing breed. Auto-sexing allows you to sex day-old chicks based on their down color: pullets have distinctive brown "chipmunk stripes," while cockerels are a lighter shade without stripes. Adult Bielefelders are visually stunning, featuring a crele-like color pattern. Hens display a soft brown base with subtle white and gray bars, while roosters showcase vibrant orange barred hackles, backs, and saddles with black and white barred tails and breasts. This dual-purpose Bielefelder breed excels both in egg production and meat quality. Hens lay an abundance of large brown eggs, while their well-fleshed bodies make them ideal for meat as well. Available as straight-run chicks only, these hardy birds are perfect for backyard flocks, homesteads, and small-scale poultry farms looking for beauty, productivity, and versatility.
