An accurate and powerful lathe. What makes the G0709 14" x 40" Gunsmithing Gearhead Lathe a "gunsmithing" lathe is that it comes with features typically not found on standard lathes, such as the high-precision NSK bearings, extra-large 1-9/16" spindle bore and a "spider" mount system.

The spider mount system has four brass-tipped screws that stabilize long shafting and rifle barrels through the outboard end of the spindle.

Supplied with a 2 HP motor, the 8-speed gearhead of the G0709 produces spindle speeds from 70-2000 RPM.

The tailstock lock system features a drive hub, which allows you to use a 1/2" torque wrench to clamp the tailstock in place at a pre-determined torque setting. This ensures consistent draw-down alignment every time, even with multiple lathe operators using the machine.

The G0709 features a foot brake that also acts as a safety device and can bring the machine to an instant stop.

The G0709 also comes with a D1-5 spindle, a 200 series quick change tool post, flood coolant system, LED work light, and a pull-out chip tray.

$ for $....Good machine. Serves my purposes.

I've owned this lathe for the past 6. It is mainly used for chambering rifle barrels, along with machining parts for local farmers when they break stuff on their equipment. Until the last 2 years, this was my part-time job. After retirement from my full-time career, I went full time in my shop. The lathe serves me nicely. I have made a few mods here and there, such as adding a long narrow basket on the back splash shield to hold tool holders and cutting fuild, a mag strip to hold commonly used allen wrenches and made a longer chuck key. I moved the light to the back shield, as well. The only changes I made to the machine was installed a MultiFix tool post and added a DRO to the tailstock quill. Both just make my job easier. I also aligned the spider bolts to be inline with the jaws of the 4 jaw chuck. This just makes dialing in barrels easier. My only complaint is the quality of paint on the cast parts. It has started to flake around the edges and where there are nicks in the paint from chips hitting. But, it is a tool and you'll have that. That is the only reason for 4 stars vs 5. But other than that, I really like the lathe. $ for $, I don't think you can go wrong.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Very good lathe for the money

I've owned this lathe for several years now and have done a lot of very good work with it. A test indicator doesn't even quiver when run in the spindle bore. The 3 jaw that came with the lathe only has about .002 of total run out which really surprised me. I barrel and chamber a lot of rifles and couldn't be happier with the way the lathe performs.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Initial issues, rugged performance, cheap spindle motor.

Originally bought some time ago and then had an illness before started to use regularly. It was delivered with a metric gear in the gearbox that was supposed to be an Imperial gear. They sent me the gear but i had to fix it myself. Probably they would have if I had found it out originally. I knew it wasn't threading right from the day I got it but, like I said, had a lengthy illness. There were a number of other issues. The places that had oil in them all also had a lot dirt in them. Poor factory cleanliness, I guess. A number of other less significant problems. Then spindle motor bearings went out. Then start capacitor went out, then run capacitor, then eventually overall power and ability to get going depite new capacitors meant I had to replace the motor. Gearbox housing is porous and leaks continually. That all sounds bad but, for the amount of work I have done with this lathe with continued service and accuracy are well worth it. Just can't give it 5 stars, needed a US made spindle motor to achieve that performance and reliability and better paint inside gearbox housing.

    Endless possibilities with this.

This is such an improvement over the 1940's Craftsman lathe. I have added digital readout and lots of tooling. This had a few paint chips ang Grizzly sent touch up paint. Great customer service to match the product. Thanks
