A sump pump is installed in a pit, known as a sump basin, at the lowest point of a basement or crawl space. Water from groundwater or runoff collects in the basin. When it reaches a certain level, a float switch activates the motor, which pumps the water out through a discharge pipe.

Different from other water pumps, sump pumps are specifically designed to remove water from this basin and prevent it from reaching the floor above. The float switch ensures the pump only operates when necessary and remains off when the basin is empty. Most units are powered by standard household electricity. Pumping Capacities

Flow rate is the volume of water a pump moves per unit of time. You’ll see it written as gallons per minute (GPM), alongside gallons per hour (GPH), with a higher number meaning a faster clear. In drier climates or smaller basins that rarely fill, a lower-GPM unit is suitable and offers greater energy efficiency.

PVC is a popular option due to its rigidity and resistance to corrosion, and it connects easily to most discharge fittings. ABS plastic offers better performance in cold conditions and greater impact resistance, making it suitable for lines running through unheated spaces. Flexible discharge hoses can be used for temporary installations or tight spaces, but they are more prone to kinking than rigid pipes.
