Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Start for Chicks! This is the only feed I will use on my chicks. I have never had any problems with this feed and never had any animals die while eating it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fair starter It's not my favorite starter, but it is nice to have something balanced between a starter and a developer feed. Chicks seem to eat it OK, and that's what really matters

I just received my 2 day old chicks. This is the food that I purchased for them. Is this all they need to eat or do I need to have other food and things for them? At what age should I move them to adult food?

Asked by: JadenRosesMom
This product is all your chicks will need until they are 18-20 weeks of age, or start laying eggs (whichever comes first). Then, you will transition them to one of our Purina Layer diets.

Can you feed this to baby peachicks?

Asked by: KHeddesh
Your baby peafowl should eat a Gamebird starter diet initially. We suggest the Purina Gamebird Startena until they are 6-8 weeks of age.

I have 14 3-6 day old chicks and it looks like one might have coccidiosis. Does the medicated food crumbles have enough amprolium or should I give them some of the amprolium in their water? Thanks!

Asked by: newchickmom2019
The medicated with Amprolium products will not have a concentration high enough to treat an active case of coccidiosis. You are best to work with a veterinarian to get the most effective treatment.

Can this product be fed to ducklings? I've read conflicting information and don't want to feed something that will harm the birds.

Asked by: DuckDaddy
Thanks for choosing Purina. The Flock Raiser or the Duck Pellet in the 5 lb. bag would be what we suggest for young ducklings. They will have different nutrient requirements than the young chick; one difference is the higher protein requirement a duck needs to support the faster growth.

My laying hens got into this chick medicated food.  Is it still safe to eat their eggs?

Asked by: TrishaR
Thanks for choosing Purina. You may safely eat the eggs and meat if the hen has consumed the medicated crumbles. The Amprolium stays in the digestive tract of the animal and is not passed into the eggs or muscle.

Does this product contain Tylan or Tylosin?

Asked by: Holler Hens
Thanks for choosing Purina. The medication is a coccidiostat and it is Amprolium, not Tylan.

How much niacin (mg) are in this feed?

Asked by: Bettse
The minimum niacin in the Start and Grow will be 50 ppm. It may be higher in some areas, depending on where it is manufactured.

To Purina Product "Expert" feeding free choice is wasteful. I am trying to maximize feed to growth/cost per bird. I am sure that somewhere someone knows what the best amount of food per bird per day will best Maximize growth without breaking the budget.

Asked by: Max 3846
We do have feeding rate estimates. But, to maximize growth as mentioned, product should be fed free choice. As the chick grows it is difficult to give average daily intake since it will incrementally increase with the rapid increase in the bird's body size. The environmental conditions will also affect how much product is being consumed per day. From hatch to laying age (18-20 weeks), one bird will consume between 15-21 lbs. of product.
