Buckeye Chickens from Hoover's Hatchery are a unique and historically significant breed, recognized as the first chicken breed developed by a woman. Originating in Ohio, Buckeyes were created by crossing Cochins, Plymouth Rocks, and Malay chickens, resulting in a hardy, productive, and versatile bird ideal for both farms and backyard flocks. Hoover's Hatchery Buckeye Chickens are easily identified by their rich, deep red plumage, yellow legs, and distinctive pea comb. They are dependable egg layers, typically beginning production between 6 and 7 months of age, and they mature at a steady, efficient rate. Known for their cold hardiness, Buckeye chickens are highly resistant to frostbite due to their small comb and wattles. Their Malay ancestry contributes to their rugged build and makes them excellent foragers, thriving in free-range environments. Buckeyes are also praised for their calm, easy-going temperament, adaptability, and laid-back nature, making them well suited for families, beginners, and experienced poultry keepers alike. Combining beautiful red plumage, strong utility, and exceptional hardiness, the Buckeye chicken is an outstanding choice for anyone looking to add a productive and resilient breed to their flock.

Raising Buck Eyes

Shipping was overnight and we picked up our chicks in under an hour after our post office called us, we ordered 10 straight run Buck Eyes, all 10 were alive when we opened the box in front of the postal Lady, later that evening one of the smaller chicks had passed, the next day we lost another chick, the other 8 are thriving and growing like weeds, I guess sometimes they just don’t form inside properly. A few days before the chicks arrived we purchased 4 Buff Rocks, in store, marked as hens, they are growing great as well except for 1 is clearly a Roo, again I know that can happen also now and then. Unfortunately we can’t keep the Buff Roo as we are hoping for a couple Buck Eye Roos to start breeding with our Buck Eye ladies from last year and hopefully 6 more BE ladies from this year to help keep these Wonderful birds going! No Worries about the Buff Roo, he will live out a good life on our daughter’s land. Hands down the Buck Eye is the Best breed of chickens anyone could ever want! We didn’t go 5 stars only because 2 passed so fast, Yes we will order from here again, still the best hatchery we have ever purchased from.

Hoover Hatchery customer service are good people

Well, I ordered 20 buckeye chickens and I got about half of those buckeyes and half some other breed that I have no idea what it was but they gave me a full 100% refund which was really cool. Seven out of the 20 died on the shipping process, I don’t think shipping baby chicks in the mail is a good idea. It should probably be better off getting them at your little local farms but the 13 that survived are alive and well good customer service from Hoover hatchery I bought them through tractor supply company though online
