Our older rescue pit mix is allergic to grains, chicken. He had a yeast infection on his skin today at the vet, so looking for a dry food with the least amount of sugar. What should I look for, or can you recommend in the 4Health formu.

Asked by: Linda2R
Per our Veterinarian team, overgrowth of yeast on the skin can commonly happen in dogs that have underlying allergies and also with other dermatological conditions. Dogs can have food, environmental or flea allergies. It is important to discuss with your dog's veterinarian which specific allergies your dog has. We do have a formula for dogs with sensitive skin called 4Health Special Care sensitive skin formula. This contains a hydrolyzed protein source which, for many dogs with allergies, can be helpful.

I have the same question as Jill. What size in kilodaltons is this protein broken down into? Giving an answer is milimeters is not at all what we were looking for.

Asked by: huskymom444
Kilodaltons is a measurement of weight, not size; therefore, I am not sure how to answer the question other than what was referenced before.

How finely chopped up is the salmon? (like specifically, exactly) I would imagine it can't be as finely broken down as the prescription diets like Science Diet Z/D or Royal Canin's Ultamino or it would cost more. (I am a small animal veterinarian btw.)

Asked by: Jill4
The fresh salmon is ground through a 3.2mm (0.125”) A.H. plate before it is added to the food.

With the concerns of dilated cardiomiopothy DCM and it's direct relation to peas and lentils, why are peas and pea flour the first 2 ingredients in this food? I am very concerned about continuing to feed this to my dog. Are there plans to reformulate?

Asked by: Charlotte04
The 4Health pet nutrition and veterinary experts select ingredients with the health and well-being of pets in mind. Peas and lentils are included because they are a great source of protein, fiber and antioxidants. The FDA is not recommending that these ingredients be removed.

Is there any possible cross contamination during production with other meats, i.e, chicken or beef? Or are there preventative measures in place?

The facilities that manufacture this product adhere to stringent quality protocols, have dedicated quality assurance and safety staff and follow “Good Manufacturing Processes” protocols. These protocols include “clean breaks” between each batch of product in which production areas and equipment are cleaned and sanitized, the use of ingredients are carefully controlled and finished product samples are tested.

Do the probiotics and salmon oils actually make it thru the processing? Are they still bioavailabe to dog after being exposed to heat?

Asked by: Cc60
Salmon oil is added to the recipe prior to the extrusion process. While there is some nutrient loss during the cooking process, the product is formulated with this in mind. The finished product is guaranteed to meet the nutrient levels listed on the bag. However, the patented probiotics are applied after the cooking process to increase the viability.

Can this be a long term dry food? This is the only food my JRT can eat and he loves it. He has a sensitive stomach, allergic to poultry and grains. Also, can my other dogs eat this as their long term daily food?

Asked by: KrissM
This formula is not considered an all life stage formula so it would not be recommended to be fed throughout their entire life.

Is the food produced with the same machinery and location of other diets. If it is, there could be contamination and not be truly hypoallergenic. My dogs love the grain free salmon, but have food allergies. Thank you,

Asked by: lenme
Our facilities adhere to the same stringent quality protocols, has a dedicated quality assurance and safety staff and follows its own “Good Manufacturing Processes” protocols. These protocols include “clean breaks” between each batch of product in which production areas and equipment are cleaned and sanitized, the use of ingredients are carefully controlled and finished product samples are tested. In addition, we retain a sample of each batch of each product we produce for its shelf life (usually 12 months).

How hydrolyzed is this diet (ie how many daltons or ~ amino acid length)? (Ultamino is 1000 daltons, Hill's Z/D is 3000, Purina HA is ~12,000 for comparison.)

Hydrolyzed proteins are proteins that have been treated with enzymes to reduce the protein into molecular components less than 10,000 daltons.

Are there any plans to make the Special Care Sensitive Skin Formula in smaller kibble for small dogs

Asked by: Sissy66
At this time, I am not aware of any plans to produce a 4Health Special Care Sensitive Skin Small Breed formulation.
Answered by: Valery
Date published: 2017-08-12

A prior response states the salmon is ground through a 3.2mm A.H. plate before being added to the food. This does not mean it is hydrolyzed. It should be partially digested & broken down. Please explain how it's hydrolyzed, not just ground up.

Asked by: LgHorn
Salmon that has been treated with enzymes to break down the protein into smaller components so it is not recognized by the immune system as an allergen.
