Adventure-Ready Materials

Many are comprised of a synthetic shell, containing natural down or artificial insulation in its lining for warmth. Shells are typically comprised of lightweight nylon or polyester, both of which are durable in a variety of sleeping situations and often water-repellent. This makes them ideal for use in light rain or on moist ground. For a more tear-resistant option, choose a bag with ripstop fabric, but if you’re out in especially soggy conditions, you might want one that incorporates Pertex or Gore-Tex.

For a liner, if you want to run light and carry something more compressible, go with goose or duck down. Synthetic liners, on the other hand, may trap heat better, especially when wet.
