a year ago- A: Yes, you can trim height to encourage growth below, because when “heading” (making cuts at top of tree) it directs nutrients to travel below which encourage outward, horizontal growth. When pruning a Purple Leaf Plum focus on removing dead or damaged branches, as well as branches that rub against each other (this will prevent further damage). Important factors to consider are: PRUNE ONLY in late winter to early spring when tree is in dormant stage; cut tree at 45 degree angles (just above bud or nodule to encourage new growth); and avoid removing more than one-third of the foliage to prevent stress that could lead to harm.a year agoHelpful?
