Q: Can i plant in summer

2 Answers
  • A: This is a great question. While you can plant trees in the summer, it is highly discouraged. The combination of intense heat and dry weather will put extreme stress on newly planted trees. Spring and fall are the ideal times to plant. IF you do decide to plant during the summer, you will need to take some extra precautions such as: utilize container grown trees due to established root ball systems, water deeply and consistently (soaking deeply less often than giving small amounts daily is best), add mulch around base to help keep soil cool and retain moisture, avoid transplanting, and provide shade (i.e. using a temporary shade cloth to protect leaves for the first couple of weeks). Planting during the hot months requires extra TLC and a greener thumb. Additionally, you can buy container grown trees and continue to water them consistently during the summer months, then plant in the fall when weather cools off. Plants are like humans, and weather conditions will stress them out so just be considerate of that. Hope this helps!

Q: Will this tree soak up a lot of water? Not a massive amount, just looking for something to help soak up small amounts

  • A: We do not recommend a Red Scarlet Maple to use in area needed to soak up water. This will cause a maple to die. Instead we would recommend a Weeping Willow in a more wet area. Hope this helps!

Q: How long till it’s grown

1 Answer
  • A: Hi. A #5 size tree has been grown for two to three years prior to sell date. Red maples have a moderate to fast growth rate in their youth, with estimations of 12-30 inches yearly (ideal soil and mother nature plays a part here). Significant height is reached in 20-25 years but they will continue to grow at slower rates thru maturity (which is considered to be 70+ years). Hope this helps answer your question!

Q: Are the roots invasive

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. Red Scarlet Maple roots are generally considered moderately invasive. Their roots will not spread as aggressively as other maple species but their roots can be surface-level and may lift pavement or interfere with mowing.

Q: When the roots grow on this tree will it crack my driveway.

1 Answer
  • A: Hi there, They have thick, strong roots that grow near or above the surface of the soil. Although they aren't as destructive and invasive as those of silver maple trees, they can raise sidewalks and make lawn maintenance a difficult chore. Exposed roots are easily injured if you run over them with a lawn mower.

Tree is dead and exchange is a hassle

I bought 3 trees and one is dead. The other 2 have leaves and the other one hasn’t even one single leaf bud after being planted for 3 weeks in good fertile soil. I called to see if I could return the tree and they said only if I exchange it for another tree. I want to exchange it for the same kind of tree but they don’t have any and they won’t order any so I’m at a loss on what I am supposed to do. I should at least be able to get a store credit if they don’t have the exact exchange.

Its very scragly and not healthy looking. I bought it online, so maybe I could have had a better idea of what it would look like if I could actually have seen it, and picked it out myself. Be careful.

My love of northern trees guided me to search for a red maple. TSC surprised me with this beautiful specimen. The sapling is high quality with correct depth of roots, sturdy and straight trunk and well maintained.
