FRONTLINE® Shield for Dogs (XS, 5-10 lbs)

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] FRONTLINE® Shield for Dogs (XS, 5-10 lbs) was very easy to apply topically to my small dog. 3 doses come in a box (3 month supply). It works to fight/shield your dog from adult fleas & their eggs (& larvae), ticks, mosquitoes, chewing lice, & stable flies. One dose lasts one month.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Really Bad adverse reaction

I decided to try Frontline Shield for Dogs this year for dogs’ fleas & tick monthly repellent. I was happy with my usual brand we had been using for several years, however, I was told that it is a good idea to change your dogs’ monthly flea and tick repellent now and then. A couple months after purchasing the Frontline Shield I applied it directly to my dogs’ skin underneath their soft, shaggy coats early in the morning, however late that same night all 3 of my dogs had these huge gummy, oily streaks of the Frontline Shield up and down their entire back soaking their fur from the base of their heads to part way down their tails, which didn’t make sense because I had put the oil directly on their skin, not on their outer fur. Additionally, they have thick, curly coats and I hadn’t put any at the base of their head or anywhere near their heads or down their tails. Instead of absorbing into their skin the Frontline Shield had soaked their fur and migrated across their backs. Our dogs are part of our family and sleep with us on our beds every night and I didn't want the oil from the Frontline to get all over us or our sheets and covers so I wiped as much of it off them as I could; and as I was doing that I noticed their skin was a darker pink than it usually is, almost reddish, and they all had patches of red spots on their bellies. After wiping the gummy, oily mess from their coats as well as I could, I went to bed. When I woke up the next morning my face felt hot and when I looked in the mirror I saw my face was puffy and my eyes were swollen, plus I had hives over several areas of my body. I checked on my son since one of our dogs always sleeps on his bed, and saw he was in worse condition that I was, his face was so swollen his eyes were almost swollen shut. In addition, our dogs were rubbing their backs on the floor frantically and their bellies had strange blotchy spots of red and yellow all over them. Nothing else happened that was different that day or the previous day except for putting the Frontline Shield on our dogs the previous morning; no new foods, lotions, nothing except for the Frontline Shield so clearly that was at the root of what was causing our red, swollen faces and eyes and hives; and the dogs red bellies and frantic scratching. I put cool compresses on my son’s face and eyes and washed all our dogs thoroughly with Dawn Dishwashing soap to wash away the Frontline Shield. Neither my son nor I have ever had any reaction at all when we used our usual flea and tick repellent; nor have we had an adverse reaction to other chemicals. I contacted Frontline’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc., emailing them pictures so they could see how serious our adverse reaction was, and after speaking with at least 2 different people I felt like they were brushing me off and just giving excuses for their product. Finally I simply asked them to refund the money I paid for their product which had caused all the misery for both humans and canines in my family. That was all, just the money I paid out of pocket for their product; I never asked for any compensation for our pain and suffering, no recompense whatsoever; nothing more then what I paid for their product including the tax I had to pay for it; A multi-million dollar company …and they refused. One person did offer to send me “a check for the $[sticker price] but we will not refund the tax.” No, I’m not kidding, I’m not exaggerating; I’m not blowing anything out of proportion as you can see from the picture I have included…. A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY, all I requested was to be refunded the entire amount of money paid from my pocket…and they refused to give me a full refund. If that isn’t corrupt, I don’t know what is.

Serious Allergy Reaction, both dogs & humans

We decided to try Frontline Shield for Dogs because we didn't want fleas & ticks developing a resistance to our usual brand which we had been using for several years. Despite having used the regular Frontline in the past, I read the directions since this was the 1st time using the Frontline Shield and I wanted to make sure I applied it correctly. Following the directions, I parted our dogs' hair (all 3 have longer, fluffy hair) and applied it per the directions directly to the skin down the middle of the part on their backs. I noticed later that evening the Shield Frontline didn't seem to be absorbing into their skin like our other brand; I had applied it 6:30 a.m. in the morning but by 11:30 p.m. all 3 had wide oily streaks down their backs which I hadn't experienced before with either our usual brand or the regular Frontline. Since my fur kids sleep on our beds and I didn't want it rubbing off on us, I used a dry hand towel to wipe as much of it off as I possibly could and as I was doing that I noticed that 2 of our 3 dogs' skin was a darker pink than usual and all 3 of the had red splotches all over their tummies. After I wiped off the excess that had not been absorbed, we went to bed for the night. When we woke up the next morning, both my son and I had extremely swollen eyes, we could hardly see, our faces were puffy and we both had hives. In addition, all 3 of my fur kids were flipping over on their backs trying to scratch them on the rugs and I saw their tummies were covered in bright red splotches even worse that they were the night before. At that point it was clear we were all having an allergic reactions to something in the Frontline Shield so using Dawn dish washing detergent I gave all 3 a bath to get the rest of any remaining oil from the Shield formula off their skin. I have never had any problem when we used the regular Frontline years ago, nor has that happened with our usual brand we have been using for years. Unfortunately we have had a really bad experience with this formula of Frontline and will be going back to our usual brand. We are all miserable right now from the Frontline Shield, humans and puppers alike, and I have no idea how long this is going to take to recover from the reaction, and to add the cherry on top it was a lot of wasted money which just adds salt to the wound so to speak. I hope others don't have the same experience.
