Q: Do I have to buy a metal wire guide for it also?

1 Answer
  • CS Specialist
A: Good morning, We recommend grounding your tank or pond for the “ultimate” safety application when using any de-icer. You can purchase a grounding kit at your local hardware store or easily make one yourself {parts needed: one 8’ foot metal ground rod, two (2) metal clamps, and a spool of “uninsulated” copper wire}. Drive the 8’ long metal rod nearly all the way into the ground next to the tank or pond. Next, clamp the uninsulated copper wire to the side of a metal tank or drape the copper wire into the bottom of a plastic tank. Finally, connect the other end of the uninsulated copper wire to the metal post.

Q: What’s the estimated annual cost or energy consumption to run this in zone 5 US

2 Answers
  • CS Specialist
A: Hello, to determine how much the electricity used for running a 1250watt deicer, you will need to use the formula: Watts x 24 hours a day x 30 days / 1000 kilowatt an hour (kwh) x cost per (kwh). If the unit were to run the full 24 hours a day it would be an average of $3.00 a day.

It works

I couldn't be any happier with this ice chaser. I hooked this little guy up on a large trough that had in inch of ice and within 30 minutes, half of the ice was gone along with the headache of busting ice for the horses. I will definitely buy another if something were to happen to this one or for another trough. You can't go wrong with this one.

Shocked my horses!

This was installed correctly and still malfunctioned and shocked my horses, who are now afraid to drink out of the tank. Contacted the manufacturer who was rude and less than helpful - and doesn't seem to care about improving the quality of their product. I don't be purchasing anything from this company again!

Junk

Junk. Lasted four months of use before leaking, sinking, and shorting out. Can’t buy a decent product if you wanted to, these days.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Water trough keeps ice free

Heats up well to keep trough open. This is the floating version. I prefer the model that can be modified to sink to bottom of trough.

Unfrozen water tank!

Does exactly what it's supposed to...cows drank with no problem in 10-20 degree weather. Heads up...it does require to be wired to a grounding rod with copper wire in the tank, so be prepared.
