Q: Do you think it would work well for a 55 gallon tank that is frozen?
4 months ago1 Answer
- A: Hello, Riss Thank you for reaching out to Farm Innovators. Our deicer is designed to operate immersed in water. If placed in snow or laying on top of ice, the unit will heat up and shut down after the 90 second elapsed time. If left long enough in the snow or ice, the unit will turn back on once the thermostat has reached its lower set temp. However, it will do it all over again! When placed in water the thermodynamics is totally different than laying in snow or ice. The water acts as a heatsink along with convection currents. The hot water molecules residing near the heat source tend to become less dense. They rise above cooler dense molecules. As these hotter molecules rise, they tend to cool down and begin to sink, replacing cooler molecules. These movements occurring within the water are what allow the deicer to stay on longer and bring the body of water above freezing. Thank you,4 months agoHelpful?

Q: Does it work properly when you use an extension cord?
6 months ago1 Answer
- A: The manufacturer expressly recommends not using an extension cord with the Farm Innovators 1,500W Sinking Tank De-Icer to ensure proper operation and safety. Using an extension cord can cause a voltage drop, which reduces power to the de-icer and results in poor performance, potentially causing it to freeze over in extreme cold. More importantly, high-wattage appliances like this de-icer (drawing about 12.5 amps) can cause an undersized or long extension cord to overheat and become a fire hazard.6 months agoHelpful?
Q: Can it be used in a 55 gallon tank?
6 months ago1 Answer
- A: Hello, thank you for your question. It can be used in a 55-gallon tank, even though it’s rated for up to about 300 gallons. It should keep the water from freezing as long as it stays fully submerged.6 months agoHelpful?

Do not recommend

Wanted to test it in a bathtub of cold water. Plugged directly into a gfci outlet. It warmed up for about a minute, clicked, and never made heat again. Water temperature was cold, probably 45 degrees. The outlet was still on. Got a bad one 👎

Works well with a few caveats
Works well but a few things to know. You may need to weigh it down as it is very light and may not sit flat. Also it is essential that you either plug it in directly and use a higher amp gfci if that’s an option, Will trip the standard ones. Lastly, if you need an extension cord get a heavy duty outdoor cord. The basic outdoor rated cords won’t handle it. Think of it as hooking up an oven element
