Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Great water heater keeps tank thawed just takes a little time to get hooked up

Rated 3 out of 5 by from one season is all you get They burn out fast. My last one got very weak and barely worked. One previous got so hot it started boiling water. The cage rots out pretty fast leaving rust all over. Next winter I'll plan better and get a different brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Priced Seems well made. It's working, so far. The chickens are not bothered by it. We have not had freezing temps since I bought it, so I may have to change my rating at a later date. Have not had it long enough to determine it's longevity. However, TSC has the best price making it a reasonable solution for my backyard flock. I'm hoping it holds up for several years.

will it stop shut off if tank goes dry

Asked by: picklecwell
If tank runs dry, it will continue to cycle on and off as the thermostat will now sense the air temperature. However, it will only cycle on for about 30 seconds, then shut off again for awhile. Unit should not be allowed to operate in a dry tank.

Can you control the temperature, or is it set to cutoff at a certain temp?

Asked by: 4712
You cannot control the temperature. It turns on and off automatically based upon the internal thermostat setting. It turns on approximately 35 degree water temperature. Then the heater will heat up and shut off automatically. It won't turn back on again until it cools back to around 35 degrees F.

If the unit shut off is not based on temperature (see reply below "the water temp when the unit shuts off will vary between 45-60 degrees" ), how does the unit determine when to shut off?

Asked by: LenaL
Please see the manufacturer's response as follows. All of our tank deicers are thermostatically controlled. The unit will turn on when the water temperature around the heating element is at 35° F and will normally turn off when the water temperature in the specific application is at 45° F (at -10° F outside temperature.) If the air temperature is greater than -10° F, then the water temperature may be a little warmer than 45° F before shutting off. We cannot provide any more specific information on the function of the thermostat as it considered private company information.

Can you use a 200' outdoor extension cord for this heater?

Asked by: PamDG

The product description says the heater is for 70-300 gallon tanks. Why is there a lower tank size limit? Is it a fire risk or something if it's a smaller tank? I may eventually use it for a larger tank but initially it will be maybe 30 gallons.

Asked by: smithb20
The use of H-429 in 70 gallons of water may be acceptable in some zones when the weather is extremely harsh. As the long as the unit is installed per the “Consumer Information Sheet” and always submerged in water, it will be safe to use.

How much will this cost in electric to run for a month straight?

Asked by: Jimbo5
It will depend upon the cost/kilowatt hour that your electric company charges and how many hours per day the unit runs. For example, this is a 1500 watt unit so it uses 1.5 kilowatts. If your electricity cost is $.10/kwh and the unit ran for 8 hours/day, your daily cost would be $1.20 (1.5 x $.10 x 8).
