Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Far So Good We bought the first one in November for our 1,000 gallon goldfish pond and exactly 31 days later it began to trip our GFCI outlet. So we didn't want to buy another of these and switched to using an air pump. Unfortunately once the temperature dropped, the air pump couldn't keep up. With a winter storm coming, we bought another one of these deicers for our pond and we're so glad we did. We managed to melt enough ice with a pot of boiling water to put this in the hole. It took it awhile to melt through 5 or 6 inches of ice, but within 30 to 45 minutes it was in the water. It kept a hole about 3 inches out all the way around the deicer. It even kept a hole in the ice through the 2019 winter storm (polar vortex) with a temperature of -12F and -32F wind chills in Northwestern Pennsylvania. The cold spell lasted about 2 or 3 days, but this deicer kept up with it. All we did was keep the snow off the top of the deicer. We were a little concerned about letting the deicer touch the PVC pond liner so we tied rope to the deicer's power cord and placed the ends under rocks on the edges of the pond to keep the deicer away from the liner. Hopefully this deicer continues to last awhile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great We have a 300 gallon fish pond and this works great at keeping the ice open and the fish safe. Less expensive than heaters bought at the aquarium shop.

Is there any way you can check the unit is working????

Asked by: Judy33
Yes. Unplug the unit and place it in a freezer for 1 hour. Remove from freezer and then plug it in to a working outlet. Feel the silver heating element to see if it heats up. If it does, it's working.

What are the on & off Temperature settings

Asked by: white1
All of our deicers, including this one, turn on when the water temp falls below 35 degrees F. Then they heat up to their pre-set internal thermostat temperature and shut off automatically. The shut off is not related to water temp, only the turn on point. Factors affecting how long it will take include the volume of water in the pond and how cold it is outside. The larger the pond and the colder it is outside, the longer the deicer will operate before shutting off.
