Reliable Fasteners for Shafts and Bores

Retaining rings are fasteners designed to secure bearings, gears or pins onto a shaft or within a bore. A shaft transmits force or motion, while a bore is the cylindrical hole that houses these components. Once the ring snaps into its groove, it maintains steady pressure, preventing parts from moving out of place during operation.

Steel is the standard construction for retaining rings because it holds its shape under sustained pressure. Some external rings carry a phosphate coating, which adds mild corrosion resistance and helps retain lubrication. External Retaining Rings and E-Rings

In motors, pipe assemblies and power equipment, two types of external retaining rings handle shaft-mounted applications differently. Standard external rings are fully circular and fit in a groove on the shaft's outer surface, locking components against sideways movement. Shaped to resemble the letter E, an E-ring clips into the same groove type but has an open shape that makes it faster to install and remove by hand. For heavy-load or high-vibration applications, standard external rings hold more reliably, while E-rings are the better choice when the job calls for regular disassembly.

Internal Retaining Rings

Different from external rings, internal retaining rings seat in a groove cut into the wall of a bore or housing rather than on a shaft. They hold components, such as bearings, seals or clips, in place and prevent them from working loose under pressure. Because the ring must expand outward against the bore wall, installation and removal require internal snap ring pliers, which are designed specifically to grip and spread these rings. Sizes range from 1/2 in. to 1-5/8 in., covering bore dimensions found in most motors, cylinders and mechanical housings.
