1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Happy to help guide you to the right primer, Lee! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Gray Primer is not a self-etching primer. The Rust-Oleum Automotive Self-Etching Primer Spray is a true self-etching primer. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-self-etching-primer-12-oz-spray-1031464 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Q: Can this primer be used on aluminium?

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Bob, we are here to help! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Primer can be applied to aluminum. While it is not necessary, for the best adhesion, you will want to lightly scuff-sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface down with solvents to clean the surface, and once it is clean and dry you can proceed to apply the primer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Q: Can you use a hardner . Same one you use for the tractor paint.

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Happy to help! We do not recommend adding a hardener to Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Primer. We also do not recommend adding one to our paints, as these coatings already cure to a hard finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q: Can this primer be used on engine fuel lines

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Great question, Paul. Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint can withstand up to 200°F. Typically, engine fuel lines don’t get hotter than 140°F, so this paint is suitable for use on metal fuel lines. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Q: What about using this primer for the underside of a riding mower deck would this be good for it?

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Yes, Terry. Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Gray Primer can be used on the underside of a riding mower deck, however it requires a topcoat. We recommend topcoating with Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint. A gloss paint topcoat sheen will make cleaning grass from the deck much easier! https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-specialty-farm-implement-gloss-black-1-qt - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Q: Does this primer need to be thinned to use in a spray gun

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Happy to help, Troy. When applying Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm & Implement Paint with a spray gun we recommend thinning with mineral spirits up to 15% by volume. If you're using an airless sprayer we recommend only thinning up to 5%, but thinning is not typically necessary when using an airless sprayer. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Happy to help, Chuck. Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm & Implement Paint can be applied using either a good quality natural or synthetic bristle brush, or a good quality natural or polyester roller cover. This primer can also be applied as a stand-alone product and does not need to be top coated with a paint. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Good product

Using this on an aluminum boat, it's working well, but lighter that I had hoped. I have one coat on, and plan to sand and apply a second 'finish' coat of primer as I want a flat/matte finish, no gloss. I noticed tractor supply has a gallon available that looks a bit darker - they are both called 'gray primer'. Is it actually a darker shade of gray?

Yes, I recommend this product.

We're happy to clear things up, Dan. Both the quart and gallon of Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Gray Primer are the same product with the same finish. Please also note, we do not recommend applying this product to a boat as the high amounts of moisture will cause the paint to blister and peel.

Works great!

I used this primer on a set of patio furniture. Abrasive blasted to bare metal, applied with an HVLP sprayer, 1.4 tip, thinned 3:1 with acetone, and it worked excellent. I'll be using the Farm and Implement gloss black for the top coat.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Excellent coverage, easy to use by hand and spray

I recently repainted my 1954 FORD NAA tractor and used this primer before applying the paint. It went on smoothly and easily with great, clean coverage. I highly recommend this primer. And TS had the best price on it too.

Yes, I recommend this product.
