A: Pete, thanks so much for reaching out! No, Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint is not considered a self-etching product. We recommend using Rust-Oleum Self Etching Spray Primer before applying your coats of paint. Please note, this primer is suitable for use only on bare metal, aluminum, or fiberglass. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-self-etching-primer-12-oz-spray-1031464 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

A: Pete, we are here to help! No, Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint is a finish coat and not a primer. A: Thank you for your interest! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint is suitable for use on bare wood and metal surfaces. Since it has been previously coated, adhesion will be fine. However, with another brand's paint, it is recommend to test a small area to ensure a favorable result can be achieved. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Q: can this be sprayed on and what is the ratio? I am looking at using it on a utility trailer to repaint.

  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Absolutely! For air-atomized spraying, thin Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint with mineral spirits. Use as little as needed, up to 15% by volume. For airless spraying, thinning is normally not required, but if necessary, thin up to 5% by volume. Follow the spray gun manufacturer's suggestions for tips and pressures. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Q: What hardener do I use

  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Happy to help, Lyle! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint is a pre-mixed and a ready to use product. We would not recommend adding additional hardener as the product has one already and will reach its full hardness in 7 days. If adding any additional hardener, this may potentially cause a curing or performance issue. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Q: When this is fully cured is it resistant to Chemicals, ie. Gas/brake fluid? Is there a hardiner or activator compatible with this?

1 Answer
  • Rust-OleumSupport
A: Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm & Implement Paint provides a durable coating once it has fully cured, it will not withstand any chemicals or gas. We recommend removing any gas that gets on the surface immediately by wiping with a towel. We also do not recommend adding any hardener or additive as this will alter the formulation and can hinder the curing of the paint. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q: can it be applied to galvanized sheet metal IF said metal is exterior oil based Primed first ??? AND I assume your product is "mineral spirits clean up Alkyd oil based too"

A: We're happy to help, Mike. We do not recommend applying Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm & Implement Paint to galvanized metal as it will not adhere to the surface. We recommend first applying Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer as it can turn galvanized metal into a paintable surface. Our Farm & Implement paint can be cleaned using mineral spirits or acetone. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-zinsser-bulls-eye-123-white-1-gal-2001 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

  • A: Hi there, Thank you for asking, You can use directly on metal. ALL SURFACES: Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt and chemical contaminants by washing the surface with a commercial detergent, or other suitable cleaning method. Great Quality

Great product stuck well on box truck first try even added a second cost just because! 1 gallon with reducer and hardener went on perfectly as planned painted an entire 16ft box truck! 4/8/2026 bought spray gun compressor and everything from harbor freight took a few hours but the finish was worth it! Durability and resistance great for painting!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Bad batch or something

Bought this paint and added the hardener to it following the directions. 24hr later paint is not dry on the trailer or the left over paint in the mixing bucket. It’s soft to the touch still and you can take your finger nail and scrape it off.  Trailer was left outdoors to dry but the mixing bucket was left in the shop.  Might of just been a bad batch but stripping all this soft paint is not what I wanted to do.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thank you for reaching out. Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint already contains a hardener, and we do not recommend additional. If needed, this paint can be thinned with mineral spirits if applying with a paint sprayer. And while this paint does dry enough to handle after 5–9 hours in ideal conditions, it does take 7 days to fully cure and reach full hardness. We do not recommend abrading or scratching the surface before that point.
