Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great spraying my equipment trailer I have an equipment trailer that needed new wood. I stripped the wood off. Hit it with a wire a wire when in a drill, then washed it with water. Let it air dry, then sprayed the paint thru an HVLP air gun. 1st time using rustoleum in a spray gun, and first time using this particular gun. The results were great, the primer sprayed thru a 1.8 nozzle on a primer gun and was mixed 4:1 with thinner. Dried fairly quick considering humidity was over 70% and painting conditions weren't ideal. Temps were in the high 60s and the paint dried quick enough that a rain storm didn't hurt 2 hours later. Over all happy with the primer. 1 gallon covered a 7.5 foot by 16 foot equipment trailer spraying front, back, and top of all the trailer subframe and the outside and inside frame, along with the double axle fenders, and a 6 foot tongue. 1 gallon painted the trailer, with about a pint left.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lousy coverage I repainted a 1 use shipping container. It came in yellow and I wanted it to be gray to match my buildings. It had minimal rust as this container made only one trip from China to the USA before being sold to me. I pressure washed the container and treated the few rust spots. I applied the paint and its coverage rate was just horrible. I ended up using 4-5 times the application rate to get rid of the yellow showing thru. I applied 3-5 coats of paint. I used rollers and paint brushes. The end result is fantastic but the paint coverage listed on the can was not even close to the actual results. A year later the paint still looks like it was applied only weeks ago. It is durable and still looks great. Paint quality is fantastic, however the cost of painting this container was 4- times the expectation due to the paint coverage rate not being accurate.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t Waste Your Money I bought this primer to paint some brand new rust free steel channel. The steel was wiped down with lacquer thinner prior to primer application and was bone dry. I knew when I opened the can something wasn’t right. The primer was white instead of the gray as indicated on the label. I thoroughly mixed the paint for a couple minutes and I noticed it was still very watery with not many solids. As I applied the primer with a brush I noticed it wasn’t covering well at all and appeared to bead up. After about 5 minutes the surfaces that the primer was applied to began to rust.

I have a one use shipping container that is yellow/tan - the original paint. It is still in good unrusted condition. What would be the anticipated square footage of coverage of one gallon applied by roller and brush?

Asked by: ken b
Glad to help out, Ken! Rust-Oleum Specialty Farm and Implement Paint can cover about 622 square feet per gallon. Please keep in mind that the coverage is affected by the surface conditions, applying to previously painted surfaces, the number of coats applied, and the thickness of the coats.
