Grizzly G0891-15 in. 3 HP Fixed-Table Planer With, G0891

Got this planer about 2 months ago and it is one of the best tool purchases I’ve ever made. It is one beast of a machine. Well built and planes wood like butter. 220 grit sandpaper is all you need.

This machine is well built, it does a nice job and leaves a very clean surface. I like that it has a metal infeed roller and rubber outfeed roller, that keeps really oily woods like teak from gumming up the rubber infeed roller and then not feeding smoothly. The height adjustment is fairly smooth but not as good as some more expensive brands. The cons I have experienced are: the gearbox to mine came bone dry, luckily it had a tag on it that warned of damage if you didn’t check the gearbox oil level before starting. A little low I think I can understand but basically empty? What if that little tag had been torn off in shipping? Next is the lack of a DRO option out of the box. Call me crazy but I think every planer should have the option to add on a DRO. I bought an iGaging DRO and am mounting it to the machine, which will work but there should be some thought put into the design and a pre drilled mounting location that accepts a specific model to add a digital read out. Overall, a good value in a machine and mine arrived requiring very little set up time or calibration.

We've had this planer less than two years in a woodworking education environment and it gives us CONSTANT problems. Do not recommend. Infeed roller constantly slips out of place, adjustment mechanism poorly designed. Table must be freshly waxed at all times for the planer to successfully pass wood through. Just not a powerful machine.
