Want to keep your birds out of bad weather? A sturdy coop goes a long way — just be sure to build it with woods such as pine, spruce or hemlock, which are all naturally durable, rain or shine. If resistance to rot is what you’re aiming for, though, you should reinforce its walls with cedar, redwood or cypress, timbers, which are even less likely to decay due to water damage or bug infestations.

A steel pen, in contrast, can be even more rugged, better withstanding both Mother Nature and predators testing it for weaknesses. For a more rust-resistant enclosure, however, you may want to opt for welded wire mesh fencing or netting that’s been galvanized with a layer of zinc, which helps to repel moisture. Top off either installation with a roof made of tin or polycarbonate plastic – it’ll make your birds’ home or run even more water- and UV-resilient.

Preventative Security Measures

No poultry containment system is complete without the capacity to help keep coyotes, dogs and other natural bird-hunters out, not to mention rats and mice, which can prey on egg-layers. For birds to prosper, they need more than just safe, secure living conditions. Disease-prevention is also vital. You should vaccinate them as recommended by your veterinarian or another animal healthcare professional and keep visits to your backyard, farm or facilities by other poultry keepers to a minimum, locking entrances to them after hours. Doing so can help prevent both animal and human intrusion and the introduction and spread of pathogens. As another precaution, make sure to sanitize feeders, waterers and processing equipment regularly to help prevent cross-contamination.
