Hoover's Hatchery Buff Orpington Ducks are a classic and versatile duck breed originally developed in the early 1900s by the William Cook family in the Orpington area of Kent, England. Bred as a dual-purpose duck, the Buff Orpington is valued for both its reliable egg production and its size and feathering, which make it an excellent roasting and meat duck. Buff Orpington Ducks are known to be good egg layers, producing consistent quantities of eggs while also growing large enough for the table. Many breeders note that the buff-colored feathers are easier to pluck than the white feathers of Pekin ducks, making processing simpler. One unique distinction of the Buff Orpington Duck is that it is the only poultry breed listed in the American Standard of Perfection with its name referring solely to a color. This rare distinction adds to the breed's historical and ornamental appeal. These ducks are admired for their rich buff-colored plumage, complemented by orange-yellow shanks and feet. Drakes have a yellow bill, while hens feature a brownish-orange bill. Known for their calm and friendly temperament, Buff Orpington Ducks make excellent pets and are well suited for backyard flocks and small farms. Like most domestic duck breeds, Buff Orpington Ducks have very limited flight ability and can only fly short distances, if at all. Their beauty, gentle nature, and practicality continue to make them a popular duck breed among poultry keepers today.
