Pipe Caps
Closing off a pipe at the right point comes up constantly in home plumbing, irrigation and gas line work. A pipe cap holds pressure, keeps debris out and allows access for maintenance. Options from Tractor Supply’s plumbing lineup are built around the most common cap materials, connection types and sizes for work at home, on the farm or in commercial settings.
Sealing Off a Plumbing Line the Right Way
An open pipe end is a problem waiting to happen, because debris gets in, pressure drops and the line sits exposed until. Our pipe caps solve that by either covering or threading onto the pipe end, keeping the system sealed and protected. Household plumbing, irrigation setups, gas lines and farm water systems all call for them at one point or another.
The right cap depends on the material the pipe is made of. Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) caps withstand higher temperatures, making them a solid choice for hot-water supply lines. Copper sweat caps use solder to bond directly to copper pipe, creating a seal that won't budge. Brass push-to-connect caps skip tools entirely and still hold up to residential water pressure without a problem. Whatever the job calls for, our wide range of options can accommodate.
Slip and Threaded Caps for PVC Lines
Capping a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe comes down to a simple choice: slip or threaded. Slip caps fit over the pipe end and bond with PVC solvent cement for a permanent seal. Threaded caps screw onto male-threaded ends, and they can come off later if the line needs to be extended or reworked. Slip caps are available up to 1-1/4 in., while threaded caps are available up to 3/4 in. For any exposed point where access might be needed down the road, threaded is usually the smarter call.
Galvanized and Black Steel Pipe Caps
Metal pipe systems take more punishment than most, and the caps on those lines need to match. Galvanized caps are designed for standard galvanized pipes; the zinc coating protects against rust, so they work well outdoors and underground where moisture is constant. Black steel caps handle indoor gas lines and threaded iron pipes, where rust isn't the same concern. These lines are required to run equipment, outbuildings and gas appliances that need to stay sealed year-round. Size-wise, galvanized caps range from 1/4 in. to 1-1/2 in. in our inventory, and black steel caps are available in 1/2 in. and 3/4 in. Both options thread on with a standard pipe wrench and don't require anything special to install.
