Plumbing fittings are the parts that join pipe sections, turn corners, create branches or close off a line. You'll find them in plumbing setups around homes, barns and workshops.
An elbow changes the direction of a pipe run, often at a 45- or 90-degree angle. A tee has three openings, creating a branch off the main line.
A coupling joins two pipe sections together. A union also connects two sections, but its central nut lets you take the connection apart without turning the pipes.
Male fittings have threads on the outside of the connection, while female fittings have threads on the inside. Matching male and female threads screw together to form a joint.
A cap fits over a pipe end, while a plug fits into an opening, such as a threaded port on a fitting. Both close off a line or opening that doesn't need another connection.
