A machine screw is intended to be threaded into a pre-tapped hole or paired with a nut, and different from a sheet metal screw, it does not cut its own threads. That distinction matters because the connection is more controlled with a pre-tapped hole, which is why machine screws are the default choice for electronics, appliances, machinery and more. The threading engages uniformly, the fit is repeatable and the joint stays put, giving you peace of mind.

Sizing follows two systems: Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which uses inch-based measurements and is common on domestic equipment and older machinery, and metric, which uses millimeters and is the standard for most electronics and imported products. The two aren't interchangeable – an SAE screw forced into a metric hole will cross-thread and ruin it. Beyond the sizing system, each screw is specified by diameter, thread pitch and length, and all three need to match the receiving hole or nut for the connection to hold correctly.

Head Types and Their Uses

The head shape determines where a machine screw can go and how it installs. Pan heads are low and wide with a flat bearing surface, common for general assembly work where a flush finish isn't required. Round heads dome above the surface and work well in applications where the fastener is visible, and appearance is secondary to function. Flat heads are ground to sit flush inside a hole, which matters in tight clearance situations or anywhere the surface needs to stay smooth. Oval heads offer the same tapered base as flat heads, but with a rounded top that gives a cleaner finished look.

Coarse and Fine Thread Styles

Thread pitch – the distance between each thread – changes how a screw installs and how it holds. Coarse thread has wider spacing, so it goes in faster and is easier to start by hand, especially in softer metals or in frequently tapped holes. Fine threads are cut closer together, increasing contact between the screw and the material and reducing the chance of loosening under vibration. That makes fine thread the better fit for metal-to-metal connections and precision equipment where movement is a concern.

Protective Finishes and Plain Steel Options

Zinc plating provides a corrosion-resistant barrier that withstands everyday indoor conditions. Stainless steel screws skip the coating entirely in favor of a rust-resistant alloy, which holds up in damp, outdoor or high-humidity environments where a plated screw would eventually fail. Polymer-coated options serve more specific needs, such as electrical insulation, chemical resistance or both, depending on the formulation. Plain steel screws are uncoated and unprotected, but they're the right call in dry, sheltered conditions where cost matters more than corrosion resistance.
