Q: Can you feed this to chickens? And how do you feed male poultry in a mix flock?
6 months ago- A: That depends on what your expectations are. If you don’t want eggs from your females, then there is. You can feed them Purina Flock Raiser. To help with egg production, you can put out supplemental oyster shell for the females to get the extra calcium that they need for egg shell production. You want get the best egg production from your flock through this method, but it is your only option when they are males and females being fed together. The females will do best on a laying hen feed. If the young laying hens are less than 18 weeks old, then they should not be on a laying feed. They should be on a starter feed or a low-calcium feed. Flock Raiser would work for these birds. When the female quail stop laying eggs for the season, then they should not be fed a layer feed. They should be switched to Flock Raiser or other low-calcium feed. The male quail (or male birds) should not be fed a laying hen diet. He doesn’t need the added calcium in the feed. That will impact his overall health. It can cause kidney damage and lead to infertility and death. Even though they are all birds, their requirements are not always the same. The fact that the females lay eggs and the males do not means that the requirements are different between male and female. The female chickens can stay on layer feed for most of their adult life. Quail and other game birds are not as prolific at laying eggs as chickens and tend to be more seasonal, which is why they should rotate between a layer feed and a non-layer feed.6 months agoHelpful?
