Autumn ferns are aptly named due to their fall-like coloration. Tints of gold, orange, and copper are present as fronds unfurl in early spring, eventually maturing into bright green hues as the season progresses. These ferns grow in clusters of large, damatic foliage that add visually interesting texture to shaded landscapes. Hardy in zones 4-9, Autumn ferns naturalize to the area they are planted in; healthy colonies will begin to spread around 5 years, making them a helpful tool for erosion control. Divide crowns in early spring to further encourage their spread while similarly removing any crowns that extend into unwanted areas to control growth.
