'Merritt's Supreme' is a must for your butterfly garden! This tidy compact hydrangea typically grows to approximately 4' high and as wide. It features rounded clusters of beautiful rose pink to purple blooms. An acidic soil will produce violet-blue blooms, as the flower color of this hydrangea often varies depending on the soil pH. 'Merritt's Supreme' begins to bloom in July for up to two months. These flower heads keep well, turning to green, red, or purple shades in autumn, offering seasonal interest to the landscape. This versatile and vigorous hydrangea is among the showiest of flowering shrubs and would be spectacular in any landscape design. Or pot it up to add a splash of color to your patio or deck! Guaranteed to Grow: Product must be purchased before June 1st. Sales receipt and UPC required. For refund, please go to: https://retail.degroot-inc.com/guarantee.

Q&As

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

Q: If I put two plants in one pot wooded overwhelm it

1 Answer
  • AI-generated
A: Yes, planting two in one pot may eventually overwhelm it as each plant typically grows to approximately 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. While you can start them in a container as small as 6 inches or 1 gallon, an increase in pot size is necessary for larger plants over time.

Q: Can they be planted in a pot and kept indoors in September and transplanted to the garden in spring?

A: Thank you for your question. Hydrangeas can be planted inside, in a pot, but this is not needed. Hydrangeas are hardy plants and can be planted outdoors this fall. To flower, they need a period of cold throughout the winter called vernalization. We recommend planting this in the ground outside and leaving it to over winter outside. You can grow them inside under a light or in a window, but this is not necessary for the winter survival of the plant. If you have additional questions, please contact us at (269) 468-6714 or sales@degroot-inc.com. Thank you, DeGroot Inc.

Q: I bought these plants last weekend and I know it's to early to plant. My question is what if anything do I need to do to take care of them until I plant them? Do they need water or food now?

A: Dear Wanda, Thank you for your question. Our product is dormant, packaged bare root plants intended to be without foliage (leaves) while in the store. Dormant plants such as these offer the opportunity to jumpstart spring planting because they can be planted in the ground earlier than potted plants. If your soil is workable, your hydrangea may be planted while it is dormant. If you are not ready to plant at the time of purchase, we recommend you store your plant in a cool dark place so it remains dormant until planting. Or if you prefer, you may pot up your hydrangea and care for it, as you would any other houseplant, until after the last frost and then it may be planted in the ground. We encourage you to contact us at (269) 468-6714 or sales@degroot-inc.com if you have additional questions. Thank you again for your inquiry. Thank you, DeGroot Inc.

Q: Would these grow/live fine in a pot and, of so, what diameter of a pot should it be with how much depth? Also, how much daily sun do they require? Thanks!

A: You may plant your hydrangea in a pot. We recommend a 6” or 1 gal. container at a minimum. If you prefer a larger plant, an increase in pot size will lead to a larger plant over time. Hydrangeas will grow in sun and partial shade. They prefer to have some afternoon shade.

Divas in zone 6. You have to know what you’re doin

I see a lot of poor reviews on these. I live in zone 6. I have a collection of hydrangeas from unknown to proven winner varieties. These are the most beautiful of all, but blooming does not come easy. They are hardy to zone 6 but are DIVAS here. If anything happens to the buds before bloom, blooming for the following season will be sabotaged. They require diligence and hard work in zone 6. They are a delicacy to deer. If they survive deer grazing throughout the year, their tender buds start to swell so early in the spring that it is very likely that a mid to late spring frost will zap them in tracks. My secret is keeping them in pots and overwintering them in my non-heated garage with little window light. They come alive right in there. I don’t bring them out until all chances of frost pass (or I’ll bring them in). They grow incredibly fast and I am experimenting with a few in the ground protected over winter with frost covers (however deer ripped through two and ate this years blooms from them already). The buds are all swollen on my ones in the garage and the ones in the ground. I have 2 out there now unprotected (it’s now mid April). If we have no frosts and no deer plow through the deer netting I have around them, I know the blooms on them will be unbelievable. Otherworldly beautiful and rewarding with research, hard work, some good luck, and success...and you cannot beat the price on these.

Unfortunate.

Dry, very small, pretty much dead and we took it back inside and returned it. Had purchased it for curbside pick up. It was unacceptable and unrecognizable.
