Farrier Nippers, Clinchers, Pullers & Cutters
Effective horse hoof care relies on nippers, clinchers, pullers and cutters that cut cleanly and hold their edge. For trimming, clinching and pulling shoes, Tractor Supply’s farrier equipment and supplies bring the right tools together in one spot, keeping routine care quick and controlled.
Tools for Clean Hoof Trimming
Farrier tools handle the hands-on side of hoof care – the trimming, shaping and shoeing that keep a horse comfortable. Hooves grow without stopping, and they can crack, chip or throw a horse’s stride off balance if they’re left too long.
Nippers do most of the cutting. Their curved jaws take off excess hoof wall to bring it back to the right length before a shoe goes on. Because they work through tough, dense hoof material, a sturdy pair with a comfortable grip tends to hold up better over time. Farriers usually keep them sharp, since a clean bite is easier on the hoof than a rough one.
Finishing Each Nail
Once a shoe is nailed on, the nail tips come through the outer hoof wall and need to be secured. Clinchers, also called clinch tongs, bend and press those tips flat against the hoof so the shoe stays put. The jaws grip the bent nail and squeeze it down in one motion, leaving a smooth clinch that will not catch or lift. A tidy clinch helps the shoe stay tight over rough ground and long rides.
Removing Worn Shoes
Every shoe wears out and eventually has to come off. Pullers, also known as shoe pull-offs, have wide curved jaws that slide under a worn shoe and lift it free without tearing the hoof wall. Cutters, sometimes called nail nippers, trim the old nail ends, which lets the shoe release more cleanly. Most are forged from hardened steel, and some have longer handles to give extra leverage on a stubborn shoe. Matching the tool to the shoe size makes the job quicker and gentler on the foot.
