Fuel consumption and estimated run time matter, too, especially if you’re planning a full day of fence repairs or other outdoor projects away from the house. Choosing a portable gas heater also means thinking through setup, transport and safe operation before cold weather settles in. Check the heater’s weight and dimensions, and consider whether carrying handles or wheels would make it easier to move between approved locations. Adjustable heat settings can help you manage warmth and fuel consumption, while safety features such as tip-over shutoff and overheat protection are worth comparing where available. Match a propane heater with only the fuel cylinder, hose and regulator specified by its manufacturer, and follow all connection and leak-check instructions. Keep the heater on a stable, level surface with the required clearance from hay, bedding, feed sacks, clothing and other combustible items. Outdoor-only portable gas heaters must stay outdoors, never inside a home, enclosed garage, barn, tent or vehicle. Gas heaters can produce carbon monoxide, so follow every ventilation requirement; a carbon monoxide alarm does not make an outdoor-only heater safe indoors. Shut the heater off and let it cool before moving it or changing its fuel supply.
