Q: Is this straw safe to grow mushrooms on

  • Standlee® Product Expert
A: Barley (Straw) One application of 2,4-D herbicide is used for weed control. Growth regulators such as Cerone (Ethephon) or Palisade (Trinexapac-ethyl) may be applied to prevent the barley from falling over before harvest. It’s important to emphasize that Roundup and Grazon are not used in our farming practices. The term "Certified Forage" refers to Certified Noxious Weed-Free Forage or Straw. Each state’s Department of Agriculture conducts field inspections to ensure that forage and straw are free from designated noxious weeds. Manufacturers participating in this program must adhere to strict labeling requirements for their certified noxious weed-free products. Please note that our straw bales are not sterilized, meaning barley or wheat seeds may be present and could sprout under the right conditions. While this is a natural characteristic of straw, it is something to consider when using it for gardening or mulching purposes. Additionally, we do not guarantee whether a bale contains barley or wheat straw, as availability varies.

A: It is Certified Noxious Weed Free. It is not seed free and we do not have a process to remove all seed heads from the product. There is a possibility that you could have barley/wheat seeds sprout.

Good straw

I did online order with instore pickup, thinking it was a small bag. It is NOT. My garden isn't huge by any means, but this is more than enough for my needs. Clean straw, no sign of any seeds or weeds.
