Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we needed We have a new home without landscaping yet. We have 2 dogs and the mud is crazy. I was so happy to find this straw conveniently at the local Tractor Supply Co. store. We bought 2 bales and used 1 and a half of them to cover a large area in the back yard for our doggies to go out and do their business without getting their feet covered in mud.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Seeds! I bought this to layer in my raised garden bed. Decided to use some for mulch on the top layer, one good rain and now I have straw sprouts popping up everywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great packaging! Loved how this was packaged. It was so easy to pick up and bring it home. I used this for cat shelters and there's a lot of straw in this little package. Wasn't sure if it would be enough but had some to spare and it was a great price, too. Will definitely be a repeat customer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for feral cat shelters It is nice and clean. It is very messy, but the cats don't care. I just cleaned up the loose stuff. I can definitely see why you wouldn't use it on a fresh seeded lawn. More for bedding for animals but alot cleaner than I could get at the feed store.

2 wks ago covered veggie garden with your comp hay as a mulch. it is sprouting green grass over the entire garden! used reg straw other yrs without problem. will the grass (wheat or barley) return in the spring or will CT winter kill it

Asked by: flywayridge
Thank you for your comment. Standlee’s straw is Certified weed free, however it is not guaranteed seed free. Some of the seeds from the wheat/barley plant can be in the compressed straw bales, therefore there is a possibility that you will have wheat or barley sprouts in the location in which the straw is spread. There is a possibility that it could return in the spring, it all is based on the product and how harsh the winter is. Thank you

CAN I USE THIS PRODUCT TO PLANT VEGETABLES IN? I AM INTERESTED IN MAKING A "STRAW GARDEN"

Can this be used in a garden pond? Assuming it’s barley straw?

Asked by: Gypsy13
The Standlee Straw can be either Wheat or Barley. Standlee Premium Western Forage’s main crop that we use for our straw is Barley, as Wheat is not a crop that is grown in large quantities in Idaho. We do not mix the products, it is either Barley or Wheat Straw that is in the bales, we manufacture one product at a time and ship out that product. The product is not labeled as when the product is stored, it is not separated by barley or wheat, simply by straw.

I see that this is not supposed to be fed but I have read on several different websites that this is product is indeed good for donkeys, is that correct?

Asked by: Big Daddy J
Thank you for your inquiry. The Standlee Straw is safe for donkey’s consumption. An equine’s digestive system is much different in how they break down feed and process it than a donkey. Straw in an equines diet can cause compaction, therefore we do not recommend it be used for horses. The main crop that we use for our straw is Barley, as Wheat is not a crop that is grown in large quantities in Idaho. We do not mix the products, it is either Barley or Wheat Straw that is in the bales, we manufacture one product at a time and ship out that product. Wheat straw is very fibrous and has lower energy values. Thank you

Is this straw mostly whole or is it chopped to shorter pieces?

Asked by: fish_4_all
Thank you for your inquiry. When we manufacture the Compressed and Grab and Go bales, we use a 4’ x 4’ x 8’ bale of forage, run it through a machine that slices it horizontally twice and then pushes it across the scale, compresses it and bands it. Thank you
